Gloucester's Fiji flanker Akapusi Qera has had surgery to repair the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
The rampaging back rower (pictured) was operated on by renowned knee surgeon Andy Williams at the Lister Hospital on Wednesday.
Qera suffered the injury playing for Fiji against Samoa in the Pacific Nations Cup early last month and faces several months of rehabilitation.
The Fijian was one of the star players at the World Cup and in the Guinness Premiership last season when he helped Gloucester reach the play-off semi-finals.
Gloucester will also be without the services of Gareth Delve for several months after the Wales number eight suffered a similar knee injury playing against South Africa.
"Akapusi's impact on the Premiership last season was tremendous and he produced a number of world class performances so to lose him to an injury of this significance is an obvious blow," admitted Gloucester head coach Dean Ryan.
"To be without him and Gareth because of similar injuries is extremely disappointing for us, but both will be in great hands at the club and we wish them all the best for their recoveries.
"But we have an outstanding squad and it will provide opportunities for other players to stake their claims for selection."
