Premier League - Mascherano to miss season start

Eurosport - Thu, 03 Jul 18:36:00 2008

Liverpool's pre-season preparations have been dealt a blow with the news that Javier Mascherano will miss the start of the season after being called into the Argentina squad for the Olympic Games.

FOOTBALL 2007-2008 Premier League Liverpool Mascherano - 0

The Olympic football tournament runs from August 6 until August 23, and with reigning champions Argentina taking a strong squad to Beijing, a run to the final could rule Mascherano out of action for Liverpool's first five games of the season.

He will miss both legs of the Champions League third round qualifier on August 12 and 27, as well as league games at Sunderland on August 16 and at home to Middlesbrough on August 23.

Rafa Benitez's side are scheduled to travel to Aston Villa on August 30, but if Argentina have reached the final Mascherano could be allowed extra time to recover, and might not make his Premier League bow until the crunch clash with Manchester United at Anfield on September 13.

Argentina are also scheduled to play World Cup 2010 qualifiers against Paraguay on September 6 and Uruguay on September 11, meaning Mascherano looks set for a gruelling start to the campaign.

  1. Maybe Javier should check out the results first before he goes, as having the Olympics in China, he may be making a wasted journey......Call me an old synic ????

  2. The reason for not entering a GB team is due to FIFA having not sanctioned it. As there will be four football associations joining forces and this could led to a permanent situation and no-one in the British FA's are perpared to take that risk.

  3. if he doesn't play for them in the olympics, there's always the possibility they won't select him the future (i.e world cup). A lot of clubs will be pulling their hair out. Every single Argentian international is a club player somewhere...

  4. Why haven't GB got a team in the Olympics? Anyone know the reasons?#
the reason is to do with Uefa, there are a select group that sit on the governeing board they have fixed members and then members that are invited on for a period. In short the UK has England, Wales, Scotland. I think i could be wrong there are another 4 invited. So the UK represents a large portion of the vote. If we have a GB side it would contreviene this and we would end up with one member full time and imagine the fall out.
We could offer up a select team of part timers or non proffesional. they might do better!

  5. I always thought you had to have an amateur status to compete in the Olympics??? Seems strange that its not as important to players to represent their countries in the Olympics as it is for any other national competition... I cant work this out... my head hurts...

  8. why deny a player the chance to play for his country? three matches is not an unreasonable number, especially if FIFA is commited to sending professionals to the olympics. we'll miss him, but if we can't run sunderland, middlesborough and villa off without him, we have much bigger problems than international commitment to worry about this season. liverpool benefits from the positive exploits of its internationals ~ torres' goal in the euro final helped our profile as much as any he scored in the premier league this season.

  10. Liverpool probably can't say no as he may have it in his contract that he plays for Argentina. Players are becoming bigger than the clubs and supporters and the club should decide contracts, not agents for players and the end of the day we employ them if they can't sign without demanding don't sign them and they will soon be sitting at home or doing a 9-5 job like most of the loyal and hard working supporters.
