The 30-year-old, who last represented his country against Estonia back in August 2003, has been selected by Leo Beenhakker for Wednesday's friendly match against fellow Euro 2008 qualifiers Czech Republic.

"The feeling is strange as I have not played in the national team for a long time," said Wichniarek, who has scored four goals in 16 international appearances.

"I hope that I will not wait that long for further international call-ups.

"I am very happy with the invitation and believe I will take advantage of this chance. Now everything depends on me and I will do everything in order to receive further international call-ups."

Wichniarek, who has netted seven times in the Bundesliga so far this season, added: "I am a striker and must score goals. Everybody who wants to make the Euro 2008 squad has five months to impress.

"The game against the Czech Republic will be very important both for me personally and for the whole team. They are a solid team and will be very tough and challenging rivals for us.

"I am curious to see what has changed in the national team since my last international cap. The national team was and will always be a priority for me. Maybe in the past the things did not happen in the way I wished but I hope that the game against the Czech Republic will open a new chapter of my international career."

Poland have a tough task ahead of them at the tournament in Austria and Switzerland after having been drawn in Group B with hosts Austria, Croatia and Germany.
