Robson spurred on by fear

Sat 12 Jul, 09:15 AM

Celtic midfielder Barry Robson insists the "fear of failure" will drive him on to retain his first-team place next season. The Scotland international joined the Parkhead side from Dundee United in January but not until the final weeks of the season, where Celtic came from behind to clinch their third straight Scottish Premier League title, did he establish himself as a first pick in the Hoops' engine room.

However, the 29-year-old expects everyone to start next season with a clean slate under manager Gordon Strachan and he insists he has it all to do again to pin down a regular place.

"I don't see myself as a first choice, not in the slightest," he said.

"I have a fear of failure. I don't want to fail in anything I do and I suppose that's a good way of looking at things.

"Everyone is probably like that in the football club. We don't want to do badly because if you do then you won't be in the side.

"So I feel as though I am at the bottom of the ladder again and I need to climb it.

"That's the way I approach every season - it doesn't matter where I am.

"I need to prove every day in training that I'm worthy of a place and worthy of starting because there are another four or five outstanding footballers in our dressing room."

Robson added: "I don't think I've achieved everything and I don't take anything for granted.

"It's about work and trying to force my way in. Even if I have a good game, what does it matter? If you play the next week and are not so good then people remember that.

"For me, I just take each day as it comes and just try to force my way into the side.

"From a personal point of view, I could improve some of my performances.

"I've got a lot to learn as a football player and the manager drills that into me every day.

"He speaks to me quite a lot on the training park.

"I'm not one to think about what I have achieved because I know I've got to achieve more.

"It's all about learning and trying to improve every aspect of my game and I think there is a lot of improvement to come."
