League Two - Wounded Luton seek to rally fans

Luton have called for their fans to make Kenilworth Road "the most feared ground in the league" when they start the season on minus 30 points.

The Hatters' appeal to the Football Association over their 10-point penalty failed on Tuesday afternoon to leave the League Two club in turmoil.

It is just three years since Luton finished 10th in the Championship under Mike Newell but since then a catalogue of disaster has plagued the club.

They now face the real possibility of suffering a third relegation in succession next season and plummeting out of the Football League but Gary Sweet, managing director of the LTFC2020 consortium who are buying the club, believes the fans can still play their part.

He said: "We need to encourage all football supporters in the region to come to Kenilworth Road so that we can make it the most feared away ground in League Two.

"We urge every Luton Town fan to remain as resolute as we are.

"Of course we are devastated once again.

"We know that all the penalties we face next season are a direct result of the atrocious management of the club from 2003 until November of last year.

"We are directly paying for the sins of the actions of the previous directors.

"However, now is the time to stand united. Our great club needs the support of the fans more than ever.

"We are at the lowest point in our history but we will get through this."

Margaret Moran, MP for Luton South, was left frustrated by the decision which leaves Mick Harford's side forced to contemplate non-league football.

Last season 43 points would have been enough to survive in League Two meaning that Harford must somehow coax around 73 points from his side next year to prevent the drop.

Moran said: "We are all furious and flummoxed. We cannot understand how two bodies who are charged with oversight of football have combined to effectively kill off a good community club.

"Sure, Luton Town has had its problems but most of them are attributable to the previous owners not the current consortium or fans."

  5. I now hope Luton play the reserve team in all cup competitions .like arsenal often do,so we can save are strongest players for important games I myself will not attend cup games but will attend as many others as i possibly can

  6. It is a shame that Luton fans face a discontent season following poor financial management. Why such a harsh penalty on the current regime I don't know. Luton have surely been penalised with relegation to the 4th tier of English football and should be left to see if the team are actually capable of playing at that level, not given a push down!!
