Laudrup tipped for Benfica hot-seat

Mon 19 May, 05:15 PM

Michael Laudrup's assistant Luis Milla believes the former Getafe boss could be set to become manager of Portuguese giants Benfica.Laudrup has been linked to the Benfica hot-seat since the Lisbon club admitted that their bid for Manchester City boss Sven-Goran Eriksson was failing.

The Danish coach, who this year led Getafe to the UEFA Cup quarter-finals plus their second Copa del Rey final in two years, announced on Friday that he was set to leave the club after just one season in charge.

And Milla admitted that while the 43-year-old had received many offers, the Benfica one was the most "interesting" to Laudrup.

"With what we've achieved this season there are various offers from abroad, but of course Benfica is interesting," Milla told Portuguese newspaper Record.

"It's a big club in both Portugal, and I imagine that, as a footballer, [Benfica's sporting director] Rui Costa is similar to Laudrup: an attacking player who won lots of things.

"They both like attacking football and I think that Michael would fit in well in that sense.

"He likes footballers who are physically powerful and who have quality. In attack he likes fast players with pace, especially wingers.

"It would have to be a team blessed with technically gifted players and with an attacking mentality."

Earlier on Monday Getafe president told Spanish newspaper Marca that he believed Laudrup would be a good choice for Benfica, saying: "They could afford him, he is not a demanding coach. And he got great performances from us with the little that he had."

Former Benfica player Fernando Chalana is currently coaching the side on a temporary basis after Jose Antonio Camacho left the club in early March.
