Mowbray cautious despite victory

Sun 20 Apr, 09:30 AM

Tony Mowbray was keeping his feet firmly on the ground after watching West Brom withstand a brave effort from Norwich to close in on promotion. The Baggies were indebted to goals from their free-scoring midfield players Robert Koren and Zoltan Gera as they came away from Carrow Road with a 2-1 win that saw them edge closer to promotion from the Championship.

Koren set the ball rolling after just two minutes as he pounced on a loose ball when goalkeeper David Marshall parried a shot from Kevin Phillips.

West Brom moved further in front on 71 minutes when Gera volleyed home from outside the box.

Norwich pulled one back from the spot through Ched Evans following a Leon Barnet handball but Mowbray's men held on for three points.

West Brom need just a point at home to Southampton a week on Monday to clinch promotion while favourable results the previous Saturday could also put them up.

But Mowbray said: "In this game you are never there until you are there. There's still a job to be done and we haven't done it yet.

"The players will now be given a few days off because they've had a very busy period and then it will be back to work to prepare for the game against Southampton.

"They are fighting for points at the other end of the table so we know that will be a very tough game and that's the only thing we are thinking about at the moment."

Mowbray was delighted to see his side record a second away win in the space of five days following an excellent derby success at Wolves.

"It's been a very good week for us and all credit to the players because they've had to play six games in the space of 18 days and it hasn't been easy for them.

"At this stage of the season it's all about results and I suppose we could have made it a little bit easier for ourselves today.

"The game could have been over in the first 20 to 25 minutes had we taken our chances but that wasn't the case and in the second half it was a bit of a battle.

"I think you could see we have played a lot of games recently and, credit to Norwich, they had a real go at us, helped by, how shall I put it, an unusual penalty.

"That was an amazing decision but we stood firm and came away with the three points which, as I said, is all that matters."

Norwich manager Glenn Roeder rued his side's lack of a killer touch in front of goal as they remain close to the relegation zone.

"We had at least four glorious chances and we didn't take them and that has been a feature of this season for us," he said.

"West Brom are a quality team and took the lead with a very soft goal and for the first 15 minutes or so we struggled to get to grips with the game.

"After that I thought we did well and there could have been a very different outcome.

"All we can do now is try to play like we did today against QPR next week and hopefully the chances will go in."
