F1 set for Maranello summit

Formula One team bosses will meet at Ferrari's Maranello headquarters on July 29 to try to agree a position on future rules and the way the sport is run.

The meeting comes ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix and two days before a deadline imposed by the governing FIA for teams to submit their entries for 2009.

Toyota motorsport president John Howett told Reuters his team had yet to submit their entry and another team source said all 10 would wait until after the meeting before committing themselves.

FIA President Max Mosley wrote to the teams this month, inviting them to make proposals for new rules to halve the costs of manufacturer teams, reduce fuel consumption and improve the racing.

Mosley gave the teams three months to come up with proposals, otherwise he warned that the FIA would itself prepare new rules for 2011.

"All the teams just want to meet together and discuss Max's letter and to see if they can find any common ground on a position," Howett said.

"He's written to us, he's given us a very short deadline and probably unrealistic targets and I think the teams just want to sit down and say, 'look this is possibly the common position from everybody.'"

The team principals held a meeting hosted by Williams at the German Grand Prix on Saturday.

"Not a lot was done, we were trying to get some understanding of what we want to achieve at Maranello," team boss Frank Williams told Reuters. "There were no real specifics."

The choice of location was a further sign of more harmonious relations in the Formula One paddock after a 2007 season soured by a spying controversy over leaked Ferrari data found in the possession of rivals McLaren.

Ferrari agreed last week to "put an end to all outstanding controversies between the two teams". McLaren were fined $100 million by the FIA last year and stripped of all their constructors' points.

In the same spirit, Ferrari boss Stefano Domenicali and other team members attended a barbecue hosted by McLaren's engine partners Marcedes at Hockenheim on Thursday.

  1. Instead of barbcues and little get-togethers, the F1 team bosses should be trying to figure out way to get rid of Bernie and Max, and try to save the sport.
