Premier League - Friendlies: United held by Chiefs

Chris Eagles marked a rare first-team outing with a goal as Manchester United drew 1-1 with Kaizer Chiefs in the Vodacom Challenge.

The 22-year-old midfielder, who has found himself on the margins at Old Trafford, grabbed the equaliser on 59 minutes after United had gone behind.

Eagles powered in a header that took a deflection off Chiefs skipper Jimmy Tau following a cross from Carlos Tevez.

United were given a good test by the Chiefs with the hosts taking the lead through Jonathan Quartey's penalty in the 37th minute.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson used the match to give another run-out to fit-again skipper Gary Neville, who played for the second week in succession.

Liverpool drew 1-1 with Wisla Krakow in Fribourg.

Rafael Benitez's side took the lead when Andriy Voronin scored just six minutes into the match, reacting quickly to reach a rebound from his own shot.

However, the Polish outfit equalised six minutes later when Tomas Jirsak put the ball past Diego Cavalieri in the Liverpool goal.

Bobby Zamora marked his Fulham debut with a stunning strike as Celtic's pre-season preparations suffered a setback with a 3-1 defeat at Craven Cottage.

Erik Nevland gave Fulham the lead before Zamora's unstoppable strike from the edge of the area, although Bobby Robson's curled free-kick in the 42nd minute reduced the gap to 2-1.

However, the outcome was put beyond doubt when Denmark defender Leon Andreasen powered home with five minutes to go.

Arsenal began their pre-season campaign with a 2-1 win over Barnet at Underhill. A Kenny Gillet free-kick on 15 minutes gave the hosts a shock lead but second-half goals from Jay Simpson and Nacer Barazite saw the Gunners home.

The Arsenal team was lacking in first team stars but Aaron Ramsey did make his debut after his summer move from Cardiff.

Damien Duff claimed a fine hat-trick as Newcastle launched their pre-season campaign with a comfortable victory at Hartlepool .

The Republic of Ireland international cancelled out Matty Robson's opener five minutes before the break and then added a second from debutant Danny Guthrie's pass before making it 4-1 at the death.

In the meantime, Guthrie had marked his arrival on Tyneside with a deflected 53rd-minute strike.

Despite two goals from Poland Under-21 international Lukas Jutkiewicz, Everton crashed to 4-2 defeat at the hands of Conference outfit Cambridge.

A second string Sunderland side secured a comfortable 3-1 win over Scottish Second Division side Arbroath, courtesy of a Martyn Waghorn double.

Premier League newcomers West Brom suffered a 4-1 defeat to Cologne in Germany.

Tony Mowbray's side were 4-0 down before half-time through goals by Nemanja Vucicevic, Milivoje Novakovic, a Roman Bednar own goal and Fabrice Ehret.

Substitute Craig Beattie pulled back a consolation in the 76th minute.

Hull drew 1-1 away to Belgian outfit Ostend as summer signing Geovanni scores for the Tigers. The Brazilian scored 14 minutes in before Thor Laleman's equaliser on the hour.

Wigan ran out easy 3-0 winners against Austrian part-timers FC St Veit in their first pre-season friendly.

Henri Camara looked lively and opened the scoring just after the half-hour mark with a superb dink over the keeper.

Antoine Sibierski (61) made it 2-0 when he powerfully converted a cross from Camara and with 20 minutes remaining Michael Brown made it 3-0 after connecting with an Emmerson Boyce pull-back.

Latics had three other goals ruled out for offside, while Sibierski could even afford to smash a late penalty against the crossbar after Kevin Kilbane was hauled down.

Rangers fell to defeat in the final match of their tour of northern Germany as Bundesliga side Schalke dominate a low-key encounter.

Mladen Krstajic headed the only goal half-an-hour into the game as Schalke controlled possession throughout.

    Asset???? Experience??? Sell Ronaldo?? Everyone talks S%$£t about Ronaldo untill he starts to play and score goals and then is the best in the world again and most of this people have to eat some big words... Same in the world Cup. The other one kicks Ricardo Carvalho in the nuts and like any other player in the world cup Ronaldo and not only him did what we had to do, try to send one of the best players out!!! Any questions??
    Yes!!! Rooney is one of the best players in the English squad and was good for Portugal. They want to kill him!!! Feel sorry for those people and some of you Guys here.

Jackel, u got the lotto numbers for Wednesday or the Euro Millions? i dont mind sharing like, justa few hundred grand would suiffice and as a fellow Toon Fan (greatest team in the land and cos i cant spell either....) i think thats not asking to much. My views on players contracts though is that they should be seen out or there aint much point in having them. Ronaldo is amazing but, Man Utd have a team that without him, will still dominate and win the League. If a player acts up, sitting him in the stands just isn't enough. Teams should start and write causes in players contracts so that they cant turn around and say, i wanna leave.
