MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (AFP) - Sweden's Richard S. Johnson posted eight birdies, including one on the final hole, to capture the four million-dollar US Bank Championship on Sunday.
"It's unbelievable, I'm very pleased," said Johnson, who is the seventh first-time winner on the US PGA Tour this season. "I've worked very hard this year and I'm glad that it has paid off."
Johnson carded a six-under-par 64 to finish at 16-under 264 and earn 720,000 dollars in first-place prize money.
American Ken Duke finished a stroke back after a five-under 65. Dean Wilson, Chad Campbell and Chris Riley tied for third at 13-under 267.
Johnson started with a birdie before bogeying two of the next three holes. He rebounded with two birdies on the front nine and added five more coming in.
Johnson missed the cut in eight of 11 starts this season and his best finish in 2008 before Sunday was a tie for 37th at the St. Jude Championship in June.
Australians Gavin Coles and Nick Flanagan, who were tied for the 54-hole lead, each shot even-par 70 and finished tied for 11th at 11-under 269.
Johnson said his week was keyed by a hole in one in the opening round.
"All of a sudden I felt like I could make some birdies," he said. "I haven't had that feeling for a while."
On Sunday, Johnson notched the birdies when he needed them, including a 12-footer on the 17th and at the par-five 18th from inside two feet.
"I hit a three wood just straight at the pin and it rolled up to 20 feet and I two-putted for birdie," he said of the last, which proved to be crucial when Duke also birdied the final hole from a greenside bunker.
