Fantasy: Oh Canada is Furyk still your man?

Eurosport - Wed, 23 Jul 11:31:00 2008

Jim Furyk has won the last two Canadian Opens but can he make it three-in-a-row and help out your fantasy golf team in the process?

GOLF 2006 Bell Canadian Open Furyk - 0

The Tournament: The Canadian Open

The Course: Glen Abbey

A par 71 course with a 7,273 layout, Glen Abbey could play quite long with rain expected in Ontario all weekend. However, the players should get a respite from the level of wind that caused so many problems at The Open in Birkdale so there still should be a chance to manufacture some good scores. The Canadian Open has no set home and the last time the event was staged here was 2004 when Vijay Singh beat Mike Weir in a playoff.

A Group

Choose 'Em: There are very few quality options in the A group which means it is hard to imagine anybody not picking Jim Furyk this week. The American is looking to win his third successive Canadian Open and is coming off a strong performance at Birkdale where he was tied for fifth. However, a word of warning, he doesn't have the best of records at Glen Abbey. In four previous visits here he has only shot under par three times in 14 rounds. Carl Pettersson is the most talented of the other A group options so pick him as your reserve.

Lose 'Em: Former Open champion Mark Calcavecchia won this event back in 2005 but that was at a different course. The veteran showed some decent form near the start of the year but has completely lost his game in recent weeks and hasn't made a cut since March. Matt Kuchar is the third best Fantasy scorer in the A group (after Furyk and Pettersson) but has three missed cuts in a row and is an obvious pass.

B Group

Choose 'Em: Plenty more options to consider in the B group. What are the odds on a first home win at this event since 1954? Mike Weir and Stephen Ames both offer decent credentials with Weir perhaps the better pick of the two as he really should have won this event on this course back in 2004 when he blew a three shot lead on the final day. Anthony Kim will be a popular pick and rightly so - he has been in sensational form this year and will be an A player next season. Camilo Villegas faded badly at The Open but the conditions were so tough - the important thing is he looks to be finding his form and he could go well. Retief Goosen is another who is worthy of consideration.

Lose 'Em: Americans Kevin Sutherland and Bubba Watson can be big fantasy scorers and are always worthy of consideration but they are also quite inconsistent and with so many other good options available in the B group this week, this is one of those occasions when you should pass on them.

C Group

Choose 'Em: Youngster Dean Wilson has burst onto the scene as one of the Tour's in-form players with two top three finishes in his last three starts - put him in your team. Why not pair him with Fred Couples for fun? The veteran hasn't played too many tournaments this year but he has done ok in those that he has entered. He hasn't played this event since 1995 but used to love playing at Glen Abbey and has four top 10 finishes on this course.

Lose 'Em: There was some hope that Chris Di Marco would finally find some form after coming in the top 20 at the Travelers Championship but a T70 and a missed cut is all he has been able to manage since then. Dudley Hart had been coming into a bit of form but he then missed the cut in his last start at the AT&T and streaky players like him are always risky picks coming off a bad week.
