Paul Simpson has admitted a return to his home town of Carlisle as manager of Shrewsbury "adds a bit of spice" to their upcoming clash. The Shrews were drawn against the Cumbrians in the first round of the Carling Cup at Brunton Park in a game that is set to take place on Tuesday, August 12.
Simpson - whose side includes two former United players in midfielder Paul Murray and teenage winger Stephen Hindmarch - is set to face the Cumbrians for the first time since he departed for Preston two years ago.
He told the News & Star: "It's an interesting draw and it's funny how football often throws these things up.
"I think it's a great draw because the first round doesn't always get a lot of interest, but I think this will - it does add a bit of spice.
"I won't influence the game by being out there - it's not about me, it's about the players going out and hopefully rising to the occasion."
