Euro 2008 - Fantasy: Choose 'em or lose 'em?

Eurosport - Wed, 25 Jun 10:39:00 2008

With just four teams left as we move into the semi-finals, picking your Fantasy Euro 2008 team should be pretty straightforward, right?

FOOTBALL Euro 2008 Russia Spain Anyukov Villa - 0

Wrong. The line between success and failure is thinner than ever. But never fear, for once again Choose 'em or Lose 'em is here to help you through...

GOALKEEPERS

Choose 'em: After a season of disappointment, Jens Lehmann (10m) could well have the last laugh by picking up some silverware, something he couldn't do in his last season at former club Arsenal. The Germans are undeniable favourites in their semi-final against Turkey, and Lehmann's two clean sheets helped get them through the group stage.

However, Lehmann has not been the best keeper at the tournament, not in this game anyway. Igor Akinfeev (6m) has racked up an impressive 53 points for the Russians. If you fancy Guus Hiddink's boys to break the hearts of the Spain and their surrogate support in the other semi-final, he's your boy.

Lose 'em: Iker Casillas (21m) earned the plaudits as Spain's hero in their penalty shootout win over Italy. However, stopping the Russians is no easy task, as Netherlands found out to their cost, so the Real Madrid man looks a little pricey.

The swashbuckling Turks have not kept a clean sheet so far in this tournament, and anyone who remembers the actions of Rustu (2m) that led to Croatia's goal in the quarter-final will not be too willing to put their money on him bucking that trend.

DEFENDERS

Choose 'em: With both Tuncay Sanli and Arda Turan suspended, and Nihat definitely playing no further part through injury, the gutsy Turkey attack is severely weakened, meaning Germany's two centre-backs Per Mertesacker (12m) and Christoph Metzelder (11m) should do well, while Phillip Lahm (18m) will have more opportunities to come forward and claim extra points.

Real Madrid's Sergio Ramos (17m) loves to get forward, and he scored five times for the Spanish champions last season. The Russian's aren't the best when it comes to defending crosses, and with Xavi sending balls in the full-back has every chance of opening his account for the tournament.

That's not to say the Russian defence isn't without its charm, and Alexander Anyukov (4m) likes to get involved further upfield when he can.

Lose 'em: Emre Asik is suspended, Emre Gungor is out and Servit Cetin is a major doubt for Turkey. Their compatriots, including Mehmet Aurelio (5m) and Hakan Balta (3m) are in for a tough time, but at least they're cheap.

Russia's Denis Kolodin (3m) may have caught the eye with those two stunning strikes against Netherlands, but don't be tempted to pick him this time, as he's suspended.

MIDFIELDERS

Choose 'em: The bargain of the semi-finals must surely be Spain midfielder Marcos Senna (5m), who was one of the rare highlights in the match against Italy. Xavi (16m) was largely neutralised in that match, but should enjoy more freedom to play against Russia, and will take most of the set pieces.

Konstantin Zyryanov (4m) has scored consistently throughout the tournament, and is likely to at least get a couple of shots off against Spain. His team mate Yuri Zhirkov (8m) has also been pretty effective despite starting at full-back.

Germany captain Michael Ballack (28m) has grown in stature as his side have improved in this tournament, and there won't be many fantasy teams that he doesn't make it into. Ditto Bastian Schweinsteiger (16m), whose goal and two assists against Portugal must make him undroppable.

Hamit Altintop (9m) will now be the focal point of a depleted Turkey midfield, but the Bayern Munich player is capable of causing the German's problems and is his team's highest-scoring midfielder at Euro 2008. Come on, we've got to recommend someone from Turkey

Lose 'em: Andres Iniesta (20m) has had a disappointing tournament by his own standards, and is even in danger of being replaced by Francesc Fabregas (28m) or even Santi Cazorla (4m).

If anyone wants to pick a cut-price from the likes of Karadeniz Gokdeniz (1m) and Mehmet Topal (1m) then be our guest.

FORWARDS

Choose 'em: This is where the real fun is to be had - David Villa (30m) and Fernando Torres (30m) have been high on Choose 'em or Lose 'em's list all month long, and there is no reason for that to change now.

Mind you, that Andrei Arshavin (7m) is a bit tasty isn't he? His team mate Roman Pavlyuchenko (8m) is also ridiculously cheap.

Perhaps limit your picks to one Spaniard and one Russian, that way you still have room for Germany's Lukas Podolski (18m).

Lose 'em: It hurts to say it, but Miroslav Klose (25m) just hasn't been the German's go-to man as he has been at previous finals, with that free header against Portugal his only goal so far. There are plenty of better Germans to choose from.

It's hard not to feel as though this whole piece has just been one big Turkey-bashing exercise, especially by ending it with the recommendation not to pick Semih Senturk (3m), who is destined for 90 minutes of isolation against Germany.

Perhaps you can appease your guilt by sticking Colin Kazim-Richards (2m)on the bench, just for a laugh. You never know.

  14. It seems that Eurosport commentators do not take any lessons from their comments about Turkiye.Tony, very bad commenting. Why do you try to make fun over a semi-finalist country?Where are you from?USA,England,Australia?
Rustu had an incredible goal in his goal but thanks him he recovered his mistake by sending that Semih's scoring ball.Anyhow he has made the best save of the tournament.I am sure you can not remember and even consider. But I am sure those who like to watch football will surely remember that freekick save.Neither of the goalkeepers could save that ball. And one more subject.Do you know how those Turkish players play that much ambitious?Because Terim read comments and articles similar to yours to them to motivate. So it is not a problem for Turks if Germany will beat them because Turkish nationals have already made their nation become proud of them. But if Germany will loose against Turkiye then I wonder the faces of commentators like you.If you will read my comment please just think for a while.Keep respect to all nations.Football is an international game.
