Leeds United have confirmed assistant manager Dave Bassett has followed Dennis Wise out of the Elland Road club.Bassett, who replaced Gus Poyet as former manager Wise's right-hand man in November, was expected to take charge of the squad for their League One clash at Southend.
But in a statement, the club said: "Assistant manager Dave Bassett has parted company with the club.
"Technical director Gwyn Williams will be in the dug-out for Tuesday night's game at Southend United."
Bassett's departure follows Wise's shock decision to join Newcastle in an executive management role.
Newcastle have confirmed the appointment of Wise, 41, in the role of executive director (football), while Tony Jimenez will become vice-president (player recruitment) at St James' Park and Jeff Vetere technical co-ordinator.
Bassett, who has been in charge at eight different clubs during a 26-year managerial career, answered Wise's SOS call when Poyet left for Tottenham at the end of last year.
Some Leeds fans have blamed Bassett's arrival at Elland Road on poor recent results which have seen the club slip from second to fifth place in the table.
Leeds have lost five of their last 16 league games with Bassett alongside Wise in the dug-out and were unbeaten in 12 prior to his arrival.
Bassett had worked with Wise at Wimbledon, Leicester and Southampton before the pair teamed back up at Elland Road.
