Potters keen on £2m Gabbidon raid

Sun 29 Jun, 04:15 PM

Stoke City manager Tony Pulis is ready to test West Ham's resolve to keep centre-half Danny Gabbidon at Upton Park by making a £2million bid.The Potters boss is desperate to sign an experienced defender to play at the heart of his defence and has already been linked with out-of-favour Tottenham centre-back Anthony Gardner.

But he is also thought to be considering a move for Wales international Gabbidon, who has struggled with injuries during his time at Upton Park.

Hammers boss Alan Curbishley is mulling over his defensive options for the new season and has also seen Anton Ferdinand linked with a £8million move away from the club. But Curbishley is desperate to keep Ferdinand in east London whom he sees as his first-choice centre-half alongside Matthew Upson, so may therefore prefer to cash in on Gabbidon instead.

Gabbidon, 28, joined the Hammers in July 2005 but has only made 57 Premier League starts during his time at the club and has been troubled by a niggling groin strain over recent months.

It is not known whether a move to the Britannia Stadium would suit Gabbidon, but the opportunity to play regular first-team football would clearly appeal to the Cwmbran-born star.

  1. there's been a lot of speculation about young Ferdinand leaving, and to be honest there is some doubt about his consistency and attitude...maybe it would be better to let him go and get someone in with less of a penchant for the partying lifestyle that AF seems content to follow...I've always regarded him as a fairly decent player but if he's not prepared to knuckle down and do the job properly anymore, let him go...

  3. Why is Curbishley backing Ferdinand? Ferdinand had an inconsistent season which just underlined the fact that he is not up to being a top central defender. Cash in and get rid of him, £6m is a great price for him.
