Harrison Backs Warren

Mon 30 Jun, 12:09 PM

Audley Harrison feels his association with Frank Warren will earn him the world-title fight he craves.

The former Olympic gold medallist fights Belfast's Martin Rogan in Birmingham next month and believes victory there can set him on the road to bigger and better things.

"I have aligned myself with Frank, it is a partnership and the doors are open," Harrison said.

"I almost got the shot with (WBC champion) Samuel Peter - that was very close.

"I beat him as an amateur and that fight was tantalisingly close. That gave me a nice boost and now I can focus on finding a route to get me that title.

"The fights are going to come thick and fast and I have to overcome my opponents, find a way to win, and it all lies in my skill, ability and mental application.

"That had gone off in recent years but it is back and I am ready to make that charge."

Harrison initially promoted his own fights but feels he needs Warren's help during this crucial period.

"Where the current market is, I've decided to make a play to align myself with Frank. It's been an interesting relationship over the years but the time was right to reach out," he said.

"Now it is about getting a belt for me. The fights will come and Frank will open the door to a world title. He'll deliver that, he has the clout and power to deliver that. I will just concentrate on winning the fights."

  1. in agree with leocox, absolutely no heart or desire, to be a world champ you have got to beat sprott, williams and skelton easily, i know williams beat mike tyson, but does anyone think he would of bet the mike tyson of old circa 1986-1990. williams would not have lasted a minute never mind a round, tyson would of beat the three of the aformentioned fighters on the same night.

  5. There has never been any doubt about Audley Harrison's skill, size or power to mix it with the best of the heavies, the big question mark is over his intestinal fortitude. He isn't prepared to take a good punch to land a better one, isn't prepared to go into the trenches with someone and impose his will on them. All of his fights are fought at as safe a distance as it is posible to get without actually leaving the ring. I would love to see him represent England on the world stage but unless he developes the heart of a Holyfield or Holmes,he aint gonna fight like one.

  6. I'm glad Audley has foregone the self promotion line, because he was brilliant at it at the cost of his public standing (nobody liked him because nobody likes a show off) and his ring prospects (it split his concentration - Mike Sprott, anyone?). Frank will find the opponents, that's what he does best. Audley can focus his considerable mental capacity purely on the task in hand, and I think he can do what he's claimed all along - win at world title level.
