Live Commentary

  1. WIN!! LEWIS HAMILTON WINS!!!! Sensational performance from the Briton, who takes sole possession of the world championship lead. Nelson Piquet second and Felipe Massa third. What a race!

  2. 67/67 FINAL LAP: Lewis Hamilton has a brilliant victory in his grasp...

  3. 66/67 Massa is miles off the pace. He is losing ground to Piquet and could in fact lose third to Nick Heidfeld.

  4. 64/67 Hamilton's lead is up to four seconds and Piquet continues to hold on to second place. What a result this would be for the rookie!

  5. 62/67 Timo Glock has been taken to hospital in an ambulance, but the word from Toyota is that there are no visible injuries. That's a relief.

  6. 61/67 Raikkonen passes Kubica for sixth place, while Massa closes on the second-placed Piquet.

  7. 60/67 HE'S DONE IT!! LEWIS HAMILTON LEADS!!! He goes up the inside of Piquet at the hairpin, locks up but makes the move stick! What a performance.

  8. 59/67 Hamilton still has to overtake Nelson Piquet, who leads this race and is on a one-stop strategy.

  9. 58/67 Massa seemed to give Hamilton plenty of space to pull off that manoeuvre. He's a great driver but maybe he is lacking that killer instinct.

  10. 57/67 Hamilton goes up the inside of Massa.... AND THROUGH!!! He just eases Massa wide at the hairpin, then fends off the Ferrari man's response. He's done it!

  11. 56/67 Here we go!! Lewis Hamilton is right on the rear end of Felipe Massa with 11 laps to go! But can he make an overtaking manoeuvre to win the race?

  12. 55/67 McLaren's explanation - they thought Hamilton was quick enough to build another 25-second lead, and didn't fancy Hamilton on soft tyres. But this has to go down as a massive blunder.

  13. 54/67 As things stand: 1-Heidfeld, 2-Piquet, 3-Massa, 4-Hamilton, 5-Kovalainen, 6-Kubica, 7-Raikkonen, 8-Trulli. The front two still have to pit, though.

  14. 53/67 Kovalainen lets Hamilton through at the hairpin!! You can't imagine Fernando Alonso doing that. Meanwhile Rubens Barrichello is out.

  15. 51/67 Out comes Hamilton... he is behind Massa and also Heikki Kovalainen! Disaster! He needs to overtake his team-mate and also Massa and, this being F1, that won't happen.

  16. 50/67 Hamilton pits! Hamilton pits! What are McLaren playing at? He hasn't got anything like enough time to stay in front of Massa!

  17. 48/67 Contact!! David Coulthard goes around the outside of Barrichello then cuts across and takes his nose off! A pointless collision between the two most experienced men on the grid. They both pit for new parts.

  18. 46/67 Kimi on the charge! He passes Jarno Trulli for 7th position. Meanwhile Lewis Hamilton's lead over Massa is up to 10 seconds.

  19. 44/67 Kimi Raikkonen is starting to enjoy himself, and has overtaken both Vettel and Alonso. He is up to P8.

  20. 42/67 Webber finally pulls off the track and in comes the safety car!! Go!! Lewis Hamilton needs to build a gap of around 25 seconds. He presently has 2.5 seconds.

  21. 41/67 Mark Webber continues to press on despite the fact that he is smoking all over the place. Very strange, and he is surely leaving oil on the track.

  22. 41/67 Brave tactics from McLaren, or just stupid? Massa has made his stop and caught up with the safety car. He is now just 50 metres behind Hamilton who must make another pit stop.

  23. 40/67 Bad news for Mark Webber. His engine is spewing blue smoke out the back and his race is over. Meanwhile Vettel nearly collides with Alonso on the exit from the pits.

  24. 39/67 Amazingly, Lewis Hamilton drives past the pit lane and he will stay out. Meanwhile Felipe Massa and Kovalainen. Hamilton stays behind the safety car and that is a very curious decision.

  25. 38/67 All the teams are preparing to pit their cars... they are not allowed just yet.

  26. 37/67 The yellow flags are out and Lewis Hamilton's lead is instantly reduced to nothing. The medics tend to Glock who thankfully seems to be unhurt - albeit slightly dazed. The same cannot be said of his car, which is a write-off.

  27. 36/67 Thwack!! He suffers a rear suspension failure as he turns onto the start-finish straight, careers across the track and smashes into the pit wall. Ouch. Safety car out.

  28. 35/67 Kazuki Nakajima has already spun today - now he runs wide. It's just not happening for the Japanese rider at Williams.

  29. 34/67 We reach half distance as Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello get involved in an intra-Honda battle. Barrichello prevails. It's great racing, but neither man will be happy to be scrapping over 16th place.

  30. 32/67 Hamilton's lead over Felipe Massa has stabilised at around 11 seconds. Credit to Massa, who has comprehensively outperformed his team-mate this weekend.

  31. 30/67 In comes Glock - last man to pit - it's a 7.8-second stop. Looks like a standard two-stop strategy. He immediately gets ensnared in a battle with Sebastien Bourdais that the Frenchman wins with an impressive manouevre.

  32. 29/67 Timo Glock is still running third and is yet to pit. Surely he's not thinking about a one-stopper?

  33. 26/67 The main contenders have all pitted and it seems to business as usual. Lewis Hamilton is 9.5 seconds clear and all seems hunky dory for McLaren.

  34. 24/67 David Coulthard runs a little wide but no harm done and he regains control.

  35. 23/67 Raikkonen pits and seems to be operating a similar strategy to Massa. But good tactics cannot cover for a basic lack of pace, and that is the world champion's problem.

  36. 21/67 Massa pits and is fitted up with a set of soft tyres - Hamilton's were harder - he looks set for a shorter middle stint.

  37. 20/67 Kubica has also pitted as Hamilton backs off Trulli. McLaren have obviously been on the radio telling him to behave. And Trulli pits, so no real harm done.

  38. 19/67 Lewis Hamilton comes into the pits... a nine-second stop and that indicates he will take a long middle stint. He comes out in front of Jarno Trulli but makes a mistake and lets the Toyota through! Not good news.

  39. 17/67 David Coulthard has overtaken Jenson Button for 13th place. Meanwhile Kazuki Nakajima takes a spin.

  40. 16/67 A little bit of a Force India bun fight at the back of the pack. Sutil overtakes Fisichella.

  41. 14/67 Raikkonen continues to fall back and is now less than a second ahead of Alonso, whom he overtook earlier in the race. He is 22 miserable seconds behind the leader.

  42. 12/67 The Toyota mechanics tell Jarno Trulli he needs two more seconds on Sebastian Vettel. You might think they'd be more concerned with Kimi Raikkonen, but there you go. A great performance from Trulli so far.

  43. 11/67 Fastest lap from Lewis Hamilton - 1:16.078. He is streaking away here. Meanwhile Raikkonen is still languishing in sixth. This is not going well for Ferrari.

  44. 9/67 Button is struggling and so too is Honda team-mate Rubens Barrichello - under intense pressure down in 16th place.

  45. 7/67 Lewis Hamilton is storming clear and, while you have to ask questions about the drivers' fuel loads, it does not look like anyone can live with him today.

  46. 6/67 Jenson Button is coming under pressure from David Coulthard and Nico Rosberg for P13.

  47. 5/67 Hamilton's lead is 3.7 seconds over Massa and he is already 11 seconds clear of Raikkonen. He looks supreme.

  48. 4/67 Kubica runs wide and cuts back onto the track at high speed right in front of Trulli. Now Alonso oversteers and that allows Kimi Raikkonen to go through into sixth place.

  49. 3/67 After two laps: 1-Hamilton, 2-Massa, 3-Kovalainen, 4-Kubica, 5-Trulli, 6-Alonso, 7-Raikkonen, 8-Vettel. Button 13th, Coulthard 14th.

  50. 2/67 Great start from Robert Kubica, who is up to fourth place. Kimi Raikkonen has dropped a place and is now down in seventh. Hamilton already leads by 1.8 seconds.

  51. 1/67 The red lights are on..... GOOOOOOO!!! Hamilton gets a great start and leads into the first corner. Kovalainen is all over the back of Massa.

  52. - So organised... a large group of German fans hold up coloured cards in unison to spell out the names of the McLaren duo: "Lewis & Heikki".
