Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke believes Erik ten Hag has his work cut out to solve the crisis at Old Trafford ahead of the new campaign.

Ten Hag, 52, has been charged with the task of turning things around at the Theatre of Dreams after a disastrous campaign. A combination of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick guided the side to sixth place in the Premier League standings. They ended up 35 points adrift of champions Manchester City having won just 16 league games during 2021-2022.

Pundits and ex-United players have been scathing about United’s disjointed displays. And the hope is the new manager will be able to get the best out of his charges while bringing in several new faces.

Yorke feels it is a serious situation and pulled no punches in his assessment of the work ahead for the Dutchman.

“We (Man Utd) are nowhere near where we are supposed to be, especially with the players that we have in the squad at the moment,” he told the Daily Mail. “I spent the last two weeks there and had some more insight into looking where the club is and why we are in that position.

“He (Ten Hag) has got some major surgery to repair there, there’s work that needs to be done.”

Ten Hag faces busy summer

A number of high-profile Manchester United players will fall out of contract this summer and look set to leave. And a recent report claimed at least 10 stars will be jettisoned as the former Ajax chief ushers in a new era with the north-west giants.

Paul Pogba’s six-year stint is coming to an end. The France intentional has shown only glimpses of his talent and been the subject of much criticism.

He has never been able to dominate games as club officials hoped and may move back to Juventus. There were links to Manchester City but a switch to Turin seems more likely.

Ten Hag clearly means business after terminating his Ajax contract early in order to start work with United. He watched the final game of the season and would have been underwhelmed as his new club suffered a 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace.

United ended the season with their lowest points tally since the Premier League began. Ten Hag has much to do but has shown at Ajax that he knows how to get the job done.
