Hardik-inspired India hammer England in Jos Buttler's first outing as full-time captain

Jos Buttler’s first innings as England’s new captain lasted just one ball as his golden duck set the tone for a 50-run thumping by India.

After the storming success of the Test side under new management, Buttler was probably on a hiding to nothing in his first game as official captain but this was the worst possible start to his tenure, his team bowled out for 148 having never threatened victory.  “We were outplayed,” he admitted. “The ball swung more than I have ever seen in a T20. I thought India bowled fantastically well and we couldn't get back in the game from that point.”

His predecessor, Eoin Morgan, was watching from the Sky commentary pod just beyond the boundary as Buttler was bowled through the gate from the third ball of the England innings by swing bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Jason Roy played one of the worst ever England T20 innings, stumbling around for four off 16 balls, a strike rate of 25, as the India’s bowlers hit the seam and swung the new ball at pace on a quick pitch and England had no answer.

India were led by the superb Hardik Pandya, who bowled with pace and skill for his best T20 figures of four for 33, after earlier top scoring for India with 51 off 33 balls. It is not going to get any easier for England either, with India set to welcome back Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant for Saturday's game at Edgbaston.

Chasing 199 to win, England’s hopes were all but over in the powerplay as they slumped to 32 for three, India swinging the ball far more than England in the early overs - 2.2 degrees, compared with 1.3.

A partnership of 61 from 36 balls for the fifth wicket between Harry Brook and Moeen Ali briefly rallied England but they departed in a match-clinching 13th over bowled by leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal.

Brook proved why England were so tempted to play him in the Test series with some fine strokes and good timing, including a superb six flat batted over mid on off Pandya, before holing out to deep midwicket, while Moeen was at his fluent best, especially against spin.

Neither built on their starts to make the big innings England needed to keep hopes alive. Brook went back in his crease and pulled Chahal to deep midwicket and four balls later Moeen, one delivery after cutting a fine four, was stumped for 36 off 20 balls.

Buttler felt his side never recovered from their horror start in reply to India’s 198 for eight. They were 27 for two when Pandya, with his second ball, bowled Dawid Malan off an inside edge. He was one of a number of batsmen who appeared to struggle with the shadows across the pitch, and four balls later was followed by Liam Livingstone, caught behind trying to flick Pandya over the keeper.

Roy cut a frustrated figure and whipped his gloves off angrily and shook his head after he was caught off a thick edge at third man.

England’s start was in sharp contrast to India, who flayed the new ball around for 66 in the powerplay despite Moeen striking twice as Buttler gambled and bought wickets with his off spinner.

Chris Jordan became England’s leading wicket-taker in Twenty20 internationals with two for 23, moving past Adil Rashid on the list with 82 dismissals. Jordan proved to be England’s partnership breaker, varying his length and pace to remove Deepak Hooda and Suryakumar Yadav at crucial points as England stalled India’s momentum in the middle overs.

The in-form Hooda, fresh off a hundred in Malahide against Ireland, lofted Moeen for six and tucked into Matt Parkinson, playing in place of Rashid and who recovered well from a mauling in his first two overs.

Buttler brought back Jordan and his slower ball deceived Hooda and three overs later he banged the ball in quicker and Yadav was caught off the glove attempting to pull.

Pandya slotted Tymal Mills for six over midwicket and Livingstone’s only over went for 15 but Axar Patel struggled to connect and clogged up the India innings.

Pandya cut Reece Topley to point as England bowled well at the death conceding only 20 off the final three overs but it was an ominous sign. The pitch appeared to quicken under the lights and India’s pace bowlers topped anything England’s could manage to win the game with the new ball.

As soon as India's seamers got the ball in their hands they made it swing, dismissing the two biggest threats, Buttler and Livingstone, for ducks, messing with Roy's timing and setting it up for the spinners to turn the screw when Moeen and Harry Brook tried to extend their counter-attack.

What a fabulous return to England this was for Hardik - four for 33 and 51.

Pandya ends his stint with 4-0-33-4. You could hang that at Musee d'Orsay.

After a break for a drink, Moeen mows across the line at Chahal and earns a jammy boundary off the bottom edge before exchanging singles with Brook, who uses his reverse sweep.

Chahal tosses the last ball wider and slower, Moeen cuts and slaps it very hard to Yadav at cover who drops a difficult chance because he didn't seem to see it.

Time for the left-arm spin of Axar Patel who tortured England in Ahmedabad last year. Brook dances down again and smites a square drive for four. Patel bowls flatter and quicker then slower and with more flight, changing it up to mess with the batsmen's lines and timing, conceding only four singles and another scrambled off a wide after Brook's bludgeon.

Time for spin and Chahal, who has added pace to his spinner's armoury. That line about Moeen's lofted cover drive, the same could be said for his sweep when he drops to one knee and caresses it for six over deep backward square. He cannot connect so sweetly with his next effort, though, and drags the paddle for a single. Brook has a swing and a miss, pops on his best Pontefract clogs, and comes down the track to biff a single down to long-off.

Karthik drops a swirler running back 20 yards when Brook uppercuts a ball that was too close to him. It's seat of the pants stuff by England. India are bowling beautifully.

Roy tries to drive but the ball moves away late from the middle of the bat and he just squirts it for a single and Brook ends the over clumped on the pad by a ball heading down.

Malan starts by cutting the new bowler, Hardik Pandya, for a screeching four but India's gun all-rounder goes tighter and fuller, catching Malan on the crease and breaching the gate, via the fence post.

Livingstone comes in and charges Pandya. He is struck in the solar plexus and, winded, probably, limps a single.

Pandya is not holding back after his back injury, bowling at an impressive lick. Roy flaps a pull for a single but Livingstone is not so lucky, chipping a catch while trying to scoop.

Arshdeep pitches up, looking for leg-before, Roy defends to cover, all hands no feet, then runs a couple of leg-byes when tucked up.

A big swing and a miss outside off from Roy is followed by the hooping inswinger that turns into a sandshoe crusher as it arcs on to Roy's metatarsals He gives the debutant bowler a nod of respect.

Hardik batted magnificently but he is disappointed that India did not crack 200. They still have a problem with late-order runs.

Karthik shovels a single off his hip. Buttler atones with a good stop as it could easily have raced away for four and Harshal swats the final ball to cow corner for two, not timing it with any precision.

He bamboozles both with dip and drift and after Axar shovels the low full toss for four round the corner, Parkinson watches his feet like a hawk and adjusts quickly to snaffle his wicket.

They crossed when the ball was in the air and Pandya smashes the next ball over mid-off for six, followed by a more orthodox drive for a single which takes him to fifty off 30 balls.

This has been very impressive by Jordan after recent maulings, mixing up his length and pace. India glean only a single from the first three and a wide. Wrote too soon - Axar pulls for four but he didn't get hold of it, the ball coming off the top edge but he got enough of it to cloth it over midwicket and it trickles away for four. Jordan goes for full ratpower with the cross-seamer and smashes Hardik on the gloves. They still run a single, which wouldn't have been possible had he been wearing the green rubber spike protection of the U9s school cricket bag.

Parkinson beats Pandya comprehensively on the inside edge with the googly as he danced down but Buttler misses the legside stumping and they run a bye. Credit to Parkinson for holding his nerve, tossing it up and getting it to grip and rip. Nonetheless, no boundaries off the over, which is a triumph at this stage of the innings.

Sam Curran returns and is bowling short, banging it into the pitch to make them hit to the longest boundaries. A four ruins the run of five singles when Hardik, who has truly come of age in the past 18 months, skelps a back-foot drive through point.

Bowling change: Livingstone replaces Mills. He starts too short and Pandya fillets the crust off the pie with a thumping square cut. Old Bertie Bassett tries the off-break next, a rare foray for it, against the right-hander and Hardik picks it, nailing the drive through long-on for four more.

Better go back to leg-spin, which he does, and Hardik stabs a single to point. Now he has the left-hander on strike, tosses up the off-break and Axar hits it with the turn through cover for four. Not that there was much turn.

Yadav plays an extraordinary shot, walking across his stumps to a short one and cuffing it for four. It's more of a scoop than a pull or a pick-up. England don't want to bowl full to him given the short straight boundaries but try it while attempting to mix it up and he drives through mid-on for a single. Hardik goes on the charge and slices a single behind point off a thick edge.

Jordan bangs it in and wrests back the initiative with a very good bouncer, tight to the body and climbing over the helmet badge, breaking the partnership and becoming England's most successful T20 bowler in the process.

After a short break, Buttler brings back his quickest bowler, Mills, who resumes with a wide. He slants the next  one across but Pandya can reach this one and he smears a cut over point for four. Mills comes round the wicket, looks for the yorker but does not land it and Pandya opens the face to stab it fine of point for two.

Mills' average pace seems down on last season and he seems to be struggling for rhythm. He sprays one on to Yadav's pads from round the wicket and the batsman juts flicks it off his hips for six! Bad ball, good shot.

England are taking a pasting here. So Buttler reverts to Jordan.

You can't bowl there to Pandya. Parkinson bowls 'too slow, too wide and too full' in the words of Kevin Pietersen. Hardik murders both for four through the offside with a warp-speed swing of the bat. There are a pair of wides as Parkinson over-corrects on line. Good job Buttler knows him well from Lancashire and believes in him, though it takes some time to keep reassuring your bowlers when you keep wicket. Hardik P flicks a single off his toes and Yadav ends the over with a square drive that point gets a hand on but cannot stop. They run two.

England turn to their most experienced white-ball bowler, Chris Jordan, whose form and economy rate has fallen off a cliff this past year. Big boundaries square of the wicket, which is why Jordan is banging it in and giving neither right-hander the room to free his arms and slash it. They take three singles down to very fine third man before Jordan gets a 69mph slower ball to stick in the pitch by ragging his fingers across the seam.

That wicket puts Jordan level with Adil Rashid on 81 T20I wickets.

Mills tries wide yorker and slower ball to keep Hooda quiet, which they do but could have been quieter but for a rare misfield from Chris Jordan that turns a tight single into two.

Another over for Topley to Hooda who is in the side to throw the bat. And he does, pulling for four, splicing another pull for two and cleaving the next ball over point for four. It did flirt with the fielder but wold have taken his hand off had he been able to reach it.

Topley tries a short ball but drops too short, going for a Sidebottom special. Hooda flashes at it and deliberately edges it over the slips for four.

Topley continues and beats Ishan with some swing away to the left-hander. The next ball is short and Ishan flicks it off his hip with great timing. Brook sprints from deep backward square about 50 yards to smack it back with his palm as he raced around the rope, saving two.

Topley, like Jack Jones, thinks Ishan won't like it up 'im, drops short again and he top-edges a pull that sails over Parkinson. Brook makes the stop on the deep backward square boundary and they run two more. The evidence persuades Topley to go short again and this one is better directed and vicious, smacking him so hard in the ribs the physio has to come on with his magic spray.

The left-hander Ishan is going to be tested by Moeen's off-breaks. The batsman shuffles on to the back foot to pull a single, giving the right-hander a chance to play with the turn. He slog sweeps a pair of fours but Moeen has set him up perfectly for the darted arm ball and bags him.

All left-arm with the new ball(s). Topley starts with a wide down the legside. Some swing but only gentle stuff and Rohit works the inswinger off his pads very fine for four. What poise and balance.

Topley slants the next one across and Rohit carves it for four more. Neither full enough or short enough to threaten the edge.

Half an appeal from Topley when Rohit plays around an attempted leg glance and the ball pins him on the shin. But it must have pitched outside on that angle. Topley keeps striding in. Curious haircut, touch of the Bob Cunis's about it, with shaved sides and a mulletish rear.

Rohit works two through midwicket off the last ball, hustling the second by placing it wide of Moeen and making him chase it down for 30 yards.

Rohit leaves one then charges Curran, bludgeoning an off drive that Jordan dives to parry at mid-off but it was far too powerful to stop and the ball careers off his finger tips for four.  Rohit takes another single through point and Ishan ends the over with a flick off his toes behind square for two. Good start by India.

And welcome to coverage of the first of a three-match Twenty20 series between England and India, starting tonight at the Ageas Bowl. It's a new era for England's white-ball teams after the retirement of Eoin Morgan. Jos Buttler has stood in as captain five times before in this format, winning three and losing two, but this is the first match of a long-term spell, which will take in the World T20 in Australia this October, next year's World Cup in India and, if he is successful and wants to carry on, another World T20 in the Caribbean and United States scheduled for June 2024.

England's multi-format players - Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes  - have been given the series off but will play in the three 50-over matches, while England's best T20 bowler, Adil Rashid, has been given leave by the England and Wales Cricket Board to miss both series to make his Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.

There are opportunities in those absences for Phil Salt and Harry Brook to stake a claim for Morgan's batting slot, Matt Parkinson to offer Rashid competition and Richard Gleeson to force his way into the side as a right-arm seamer given England's recent obsession with left-arm quicks in limited-overs games. Gleeson, the latest of late developers at the age of 34, might not get his chance in Southampton with Chris Jordan likely to continue alongside the three lefties - Tymal Mills, Sam Curran and Reece Topley.

Rohit Sharma has recovered from Covid and will lead India from the top of the order, with a team of IPL 'rock stars' at his disposal including Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav and Dinesh Karthik. There are no Test players, bar Rohit who had to sit out the fifth Test, in the matchday squad and there might be no place tonight for the lightning fast Umran Malik but he, like Gleeson, should get his chance at the weekend, either at Edgbaston on Saturday or 24 hours later at Trent Bridge. And speaking of Edgbaston:

England have won five of their last six T20s at the Rose Bowl, having lost all six tosses. Morgan was always keen to chase, an attitude that has rubbed off on Stokes. But since the end of 2014, when Morgan succeeded Stuart Broad as T20 captain, they have won 19 of 32 matches when they batted first, 24 of 39 when chasing, winning ratios of 59 per cent and 61 per cent respectively.

Dew should not be a deciding factor in Australia in October and November, late spring Down Under, nor here in July but giving a relatively inexperienced bowling attack practice at defending a total might prove invaluable in the competition, given it was their undoing in the final in 2016 and semi- last year.
