Fabrizio Romano has provided the latest on young Spanish starlet Ivan Fresneda and has clarified the respective interest levels of Arsenal and Newcastle.

Fresneda is currently playing for Real Valladolid in La Liga and is attracting interest from around Europe. The 18-year-old made his debut last year and he has continued to progress through the ranks.

The Madrid-born defender naturally plays as a right-back and he has featured in nine league matches this season. He has started in seven matches and played a total of 737 minutes.

Having been recently promoted from the Segunda Division, Valladolid’s objective this season is to survive. As things stand, they are 17th in La Liga, one place outside the relegation zone.

Fresneda came through the Real Madrid youth academy and was picked up by Valladolid in 2020. He has impressed this season and now regularly features for Spain’s Under-19s.

Romano has clarified the latest details on the defender and has provided a list of clubs who are interested in bringing him in.

The journalist explained via CaughtOffside: “Arsenal, Juventus, Borussia Dortmund and Newcastle have been monitoring Fresneda but at the moment there’s still no official bid on Valladolid’s table.

“These are the clubs in the race, the feeling is that it will take some days to understand who’s going to sign this super talented 2004-born right back.”

What would be the right move?

Fresneda isn’t likely to be short of offers as several elite clubs from around Europe are already interested. Borussia Dortmund have a long-standing track record with developing youngsters and this could be a sensible move.

Juventus seem keen on rejuvenating their ageing squad and have got their act back together in Serie A. The most tempting offers could come from the Premier League though.

Arsenal have the youngest squad in the Premier League and are going strong under Mikel Arteta right now. The chance to work with the Spanish manager could sway Fresneda in the Gunners’ direction.

After missing out on Mykhailo Mudryk to Chelsea, Arsenal’s priority for the time being is likely to be on adding another forward.

Ben White has performed admirably as a right-back this season and the Gunners also have Takehiro Tomiyasu to provide cover.

When quizzed on the January window, Arteta told reporters in December: “We are going to be active and active means we are looking to strengthen the team.

“This squad still doesn’t have the luxury of not maximising every single window. We have to do that because it’s really important, but then we have to get the right profile. It has to be the right player to take us to the next level.

Elsewhere, Newcastle would be an interesting move for the Spanish full-back. Eddie Howe has his side competing for Europe and is keen on further improving his squad.

Kieran Trippier is Newcastle’s undisputed number-one right-back, but given he is 32 years old, they could look to the future with Fresneda.
