Hot football transfer gossip: Chelsea’s £87.5m Pogba bid, Man Utd target Martial

The Abramovich Hypothesis is a complex scientific rule formulated in 2003 that states the more games Chelsea lose, the more money they are willing to spend on new players. And a home defeat to Crystal Palace has sent this theorem into overdrive, with the Blues today tipped by Italian media to offer £87.5m for Paul Pogba. Last week he was only worth about £60m. However, if Juventus follow the Abramovich Hypothesis, they may be tempted to wait until January to sell the Frenchman. If Chelsea are in the relegation zone by then, the fee will rise to about £236m.

Manchester United have may have failed to lure Neymar,Pedro, Bale and the rest this summer, but they are determined to spend a lot of money on someone. Or as Google Translate puts it in a story linking the Red Devils to Monaco’s Anthony Martial in French media, “Louis van Gaal has not eaten very fat envelope for the transfer window”. Ed Woodward may think Martial, 19, is the perfect target because none of the club’s rivals have heard of him and therefore won’t nick him. But unfortunately for United’s transfer guru, Arsenal are allegedly interested in Martial too, despite the player’s un-Wenger like price tag of £36.3m.

Another striker that Arsenal probably won’t buy is Inter’s Mauro Icardi, despite the Star claiming that Wenger has bid £32m for him.

It’s well known that Charlie Austin has been linked to every club in the lower half of the Premier League this summer, but today the QPR striker is being tipped by the Metro to join Man Utd. Either this means Austin’s stock has risen, or more likely that United are now deemed also-rans in the same category as West Ham and Norwich.

Tottenham’s insistence that they have lost interest in Saido Berahino looks increasingly like transfer window gamesmanship, with the Telegraph predicting another large Spurs offer for the West Brom striker. The paper also believes the north Londoners will attempt to snare Southampton’s Victor Wanyama by Tuesday. Meanwhile, Erik Lamela is once again being linked with a move to Serie A - this time back to his old club Roma.

Elsewhere, West Ham are set to take Chelsea’s Victor Moses on loan, Bournemouth will sign former Swansea midfielder Jonathan de Guzman and West Brom are trying to buy QPR’s Matt Phillips.

And even though it’s only the Championship, we’d like to tell you that Sheffield Wednesday have got their big potatoes out by bidding £10m for Fulham’s Ross McCormack.
