Jesse Lingard has become increasingly angered and exasperated at his treatment by Manchester United and wants the club to greenlight a loan move to Newcastle as quickly as possible.

The England forward feels he has been shown a lack of respect by United, where he has spent the past two decades, and has been left dismayed by their resistance to loaning him.

United refused to sanction a loan move to West Ham or Tottenham because they were viewed as rivals for a top four place, a stance that greatly frustrated Lingard.

And now there are fears in the player’s camp that he could be forced to spend the remainder of the season on the bench as United play hardball with Newcastle over a potential loan.

It is thought Newcastle may have made a six month loan offer worth as much as £6 million for Lingard, who is spending the winter break training with some of his team-mates in Dubai, including Marcus Rashford.

United have just waived a loan fee to allow Anthony Martial to join Sevilla until the end of the season and Lingard, too, is desperate for regular football, not least with the player eager to boost his chances of making England’s World Cup squad later this year.

Lingard, 29, is out of contract at the end of the season and talks over a new deal collapsed last year.

There is a suspicion in the Lingard camp that he is paying a price for failing to agree terms on a new contract. United, for their part, are keen to run with a bigger squad over the remainder of the campaign in a bid to guard against the threat of Covid-19 related absences.

With Newcastle desperate to strengthen their squad in their battle against relegation and flush with money in the wake of their Saudi takeover, United would not be the first club to try to squeeze the situation.

Newcastle are thought to have explored the possibility of signing other United players, including Donny van de Beek and Martial, before his switch to Sevilla, both of whom have years to run on their contracts.

Lingard spent the second half of last season on loan with West Ham, when his excellent form almost saw him make the England squad at the Euros, and he was told by then United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last summer that he would get first team opportunities at Old Trafford. However, those promises failed to materialise and he has been a peripheral figure this term and fell further down the pecking order following the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho.
