Tottenham are reportedly ready to pursue a deal to sign Villarreal left-back Pervis Estupinan after they seal the transfers of Richarlison and Clement Lenglet.
Spurs have already had a busy few weeks in the summer window, bringing in the likes of Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster and Yves Bissouma. But they are now ready to ramp up their business by landing Everton striker Richarlison and Barcelona defender Lenglet in the coming days.
Middlesbrough right-back Djed Spence also remains a top target, with Spurs close to matching Boro’s asking price. However, it’s the other side of Antonio Conte’s defence that could get another name on board.
Perisic was signed to challenge for the left wing-back. However, at 33 years of age the Croatian cannot be expected to play every game.
Add in the fact that Sergio Reguilon is expected to be offloaded and it appears that Conte wants another defensive body on board.
Under Villarreal chief Unai Emery, Estupinan established himself as one of the top left-backs in LaLiga. He also excelled in the Spanish club’s run to the Champions League semi-finals last season.
In total he made 41 appearances last term, notching only two assists but was defensively sound.
At £13m, Estupinan also appears to represent somewhat of a bargain. He will likely battle with Perisic and Ryan Sessegnon for the left wing-back role, assuming Reguilon does leave.
Richarlison, Lenglet deals to come first
But first, Tottenham must get other transfer business over the line.
They appear to be closing in on a £60-65m deal for Everton forward Richarlison. Indeed, latest reports suggest the move has been agreed and that the player is now London bound for his medical.
As for Lenglet, the Frenchman is likely to arrive on loan for the upcoming season. There is also likely to be the caveat of a permanent deal at the end of the season – if the centre-back goes well.
Lenglet fits the bill perfectly for Conte, in that he is a left-sided central defender
The Italian wants to use Ben Davies as a back-up defensive option next season. That’s despite the Welshman excelling as last season went on and Tottenham eventually secured Champions League football.
Lenglet is not the only defensive target on Conte’s radar however. The Spurs chief remains keen on Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni, but that deal is proving a difficult one.
Croatian Josko Gvardiol is also on Conte’s wishlist. However, it appears that Lenglet is most likely to head to north London.
