Live Comments
16:06 - Thanks for following our coverage for this dramatic final, and join us tomorrow for the men's final.
4-6 -
GAME, SET, AND MATCH!! VENUS WILLIAMS RETAINS HER TITLE!! And she does so with a brilliant 7-5 6-4 win over her younger sister Serena, who ends with a backhand error wide. That is a fifth Wimbledon title for the American and her first final victory over her sister in three tries at these Championships.
30-40 - Serena saves the first with an ace out wide... CHAMPIONSHIP POINT NUMBER TWO.
15-40 - Some astonishing defence from Venus ultimately gets her an easy winner at the net and a DOUBLE CHAMPIONSHIP POINT.....
15-30 - Serena hits two bad unforced forehand errors and Venus is just two points away.
4-5 - Venus continues to batter the ball, both with her forehand and her serve. She moves within one game of her fifth Wimbledon title and seventh Grand Slam win with a hold to 15.
4-4 - Serena comes up with a much better service hold to 15, and this set has entered a bit more of a pattern. It this goes to three sets, this final will surely go down as a classic.
3-4 - Venus Williams holds to LOVE after another deep return that causes her sister to shank the ball badly.
3-3 - Serena ultimately wraps up the hugely important service hold.
40-40 - Serena Williams saves a BREAK POINT for the second time this match with a huge first-serve out wide. That was a critical point and the two women are back to DEUCE.
2-3 - Venus holds another quick game to 30. Excellent poise from the former world number one, the older former world number one that is.
2-2 - Venus breaks straight back!! She hits a devastating run of groundstrokes and presses her sibling into shanking the forehand horribly....
2-1 -
After a killer approach from Serena, Venus slips at the back of the baseline and Serena is able to hit an easy drop winner to book yet another BREAK POINT.... And this time on the 21st point of the game and after 14 minutes and seven break points, Serena collects as Venus again falls on her backside at the back of the baseline after losing her footing. A difficult way to lose that game.
40-40 - Venus saves yet another BP despite a poor drop shot that Serena really should have killed, but could only fire into the net with her backhand. Back to DEUCE yet again.
40-40 - Again Venus fails to confirm the hold after a potent return of serve from her sis..... The marathon continues.
40-40 - After another huge first-serve (126mph), Venus bosses the point to set up an overhead that Serena can only send wide before shrieking in fury! The calmer older sister, however, fails to confirm the GAME POINT this time as Serena brutalises a meek 89mph second serve..... Guess what.... BACK TO DEUCE.
40-40 - A lunging backhand volley and a lucky let cord from Serena earn her another BREAK POINT. And instead of an apology we get a fist pump. Venus responds by saving yet another BREAK POINT with the ace out wide. DEUCE.
40-40 - And another with a forehand winner!!
40-40 - Venus saves yet another BREAK POINT!
40-40 - Serena again gets ahead on her sister's serve and this time has a DOUBLE BREAK POINT!! Some really deep returns there from the American number one. Again, Serena falters with the forehand error on the first though! And again, after a long baseline rally, Venus turns the tables on her sister with a mighty approach shot to set up a great overhead smash at the net and save the second!! Back to DEUCE.
1-1 - Serena, looking to get back on track in a match that should rightfully be hers at this point, rushes through the LOVE-Service game.
0-1 -
Venus holds with a record equalling 129mph service winner. That was the fastest serve a woman has ever hit at these Championships and it wasn't even an ace.
40-40 - A poor volley from Venus allows Serena to fire the easy volley pass to save a GAME POINT.
40-40 - Just as in the opening set, Serena Williams has earned herself a chance to break at the start of the second. She has not done so since the very first game, and she does not do so this time. Venus fires the serve out wide and the forehand winner to get back to DEUCE.
5-7 -
And Serena sends the backhand error into the net to gift her sister a SET POINT! She just shrugs in disbelief.... And the first set goes to VENUS!! Serena sends the backhand error into the net and slams the racket into the ground in disgusts! That set was Serena's to lose, and she did so.
30-30 - Venus goes ahead 30-0 on her sister's serve. Serena saves the first with a 121mph service winner, and the second with a serve-smash-and-volley. That was a real chance for Venus this time, but the world number six is not out of the woods just yet.
5-6 - Venus with another solid hold. Serena will serve to send us to a tie-break.
5-5 - Serena hits her fifth ace (111mph) and her sixth (102mph) to recover a 30-15 deficit, before going onto hold after Venus shanks a backhand error badly. The wind beginning to play a part as we're level in the first set of this Wimbledon final.
4-5 - Venus holds, getting a bit of sisterly love from Serena after the younger woman shouted "NO!" in the middle of the point, which is illegal, and was asked to replay the point by the umpire, but refused to do so allowing Venus to have the point and game. Serena now finds herself in the awkward position of serving to stay in a set she completely dominated.
40-40 - After Serena saves a GAME POINT, a great forehand into the corner earns her a fifth BREAK POINT of the match, but a deep approach from Venus forces Serean to shank the forehand horribly. Again back to DEUCE, and another missed chance.
40-40 - Serena has earned her chance to take another BREAK advantage, and some powerful groundstrokes set up an easy volley, but the kid sis' can only come up with a poor drop shot that Venus hammers for the forehand pass and the clean winner. Serena really missed a chance there. Back to DEUCE.
4-4 -
Venus is just killing the ball now, and despite a phenomenal defensive lob from Serena, the older sis' earns herself another BREAK POINT with a killer forehand. And a great return of serve forces Serena into the error and earns Venus the BREAK BACK!! As we said, Venus has just lingered in this opening set long enough to make it very interesting, despite being completely outplayed at the start.
40-40 - Venus finally gets her own chance to break her sister, but Serena saves with a serve-and-smash. DEUCE.
30-30 -
Venus has her sister on the ropes, but can only send a meek forehand approach into the net to let her back to 15-15. Venus, looking slightly frustrated after another unforced error, takes a deep sigh and seems to mouth something to herself. Serena then hits the first double fault of the match.
4-3 - Venus holds another nervy service game to 30 with a service winner. This is a lot closer than it should be right now, which bodes very well for the elder Williams we think.
4-2 - Great serve out wide, and an even better forehand allow Serena to hold to 30. She is yet to really be threatened on her service games and could be leading by more than just a break at this point.
3-2 - After a lucky let cord goes her way, Venus holds to DEUCE. Serena still in command, though Venus has managed the deficit well.
40-40 - A brutal return of serve from Serena Williams earns her another BREAK POINT, but after a great lunging backhand from Serena, Venus hit an even better volley winner. DEUCE.
3-1 - A trickier holds to 30 after coming back from 30-15 down for Serena that time. The match getting more competitive after that inauspicious start. The younger Williams still leads by a break.
2-1 - A correction to the rankings on the left of the screen, Serena is sixth in the world and hence the American number one, while Venus is the world number seven. Venus finally responds to her sister's onslaught, hitting a volley winner off of a brutal forehand right into her body from her kid sister to hold to 15.
2-0 - Serena, showing brilliant anticipation of what her older sister is thinking, rushes ahead 40-0 on serve before easily wrapping up the LOVE-Service game.
1-0 -
Serena begins the match with a clean forehand winner off of the return of serve. Venus then dumps the error into the net to go down 0-30. Serena earns another forehand winner to get to TRIPLE BREAK POINT and the champion is looking outmatched at the start. The kid sister ultimately hits a big backhand winner across court to BREAK to 15 in the very first game. Very good hitting from the world number six.
0-0 - UNDERWAY! Venus serves first.
14:06 - These two will contest another final tomorrow when, as a team, they face American Lisa Raymond and Samantha Stosur of Australia in the women's doubles final.
14:03 -
Art T tries to clarify and give a couple of predictions (one tennis related and one football related): "According to wiki a Kopek is 1/100th of a rouble if this is true does that mean Serena has won the Russian Open more often than Venus or has she been blessed with an unusually large coin? It will be a three set final and Ballack will be transfered to WHUFC for scoring last in the last Germany Portugal Game :-)" FYI, Serena reached the final in Moscow last year while Venus has never reached a Russian final. So it would seem Serena does have more roubles and "Kopek".
14:02 -
Some interesting discussion over this match on the message boards. shirock79 says "serena has a bigger kopek compare to venus.in theory, bigger kopek means more power thus serena will win, go serena take a good care of your kopek" Confusing.
14:00 - The two women enter the court with massive bouquets of flowers in their hands and too equally large applause.
13:59 - Venus does not seem to enjoy the interview so much either: "Obviously, I'm just very focused on the task at hand. It's always great when we meet in final, it's a dream come true actually. [Our father has] done his job so he's happy."
13:59 - Serena is very understated in the pre-match interview: "This is the final of Wimbledon and IÂ’m excited to be here."
