60 seconds with Katy Sexton
Former world swimming champion and recovering Jason Donovan fan Katy Sexton spent a delightful minute in the company of Eurosport, and she thinks David Walliams was mad to swim the full length of the Thames - and with good reason.
Who is your sporting idol?
Steve Redgrave. Amazing for what he’s achieved in the face of adversity.
If your house was burning down what single material possession would you save?
That’s a horrible question! My handbag. It’s got my life in it! It’s like a Mary Poppins bag, it’s huge, and my family take the piss out of me constantly.
If you were not a swimmer, what would you be?
I used to do dancing when I was younger and my family thought I’d do that because I was small and skinny. Maybe I’d have taken that route had swimming not taken over.
You can invite any three people in history to a dinner party. Who are they?
Prince William, because I share a birthday with him and I think he’s fab. Cameron Diaz is cool, she can come, and Steven Fry is hilarious.
What would you cook?
I quite like cooking but I prefer baking cakes. I’d bake them a cake.
What was the first record or CD you bought?
It was a vinyl record… Jason Donovan! That’s embarrassing isn’t it? I can’t remember the name of the song but it was probably ‘10 Good Reasons’…
What on your iPod at the moment?
Lady GaGa, and Beyonce’s new album.
Who is the most irritating person in sport?
I hate it when someone on a sports channel is commentating and they don’t really know what they’re talking about. That is annoying - you want someone who is knowledgeable and can add value. It happened quite famously (referring to the World Athletics Championships). There are loads of good journalists and ex-athletes out there and to give a job to someone just because they’re a ‘name’ is unacceptable. It’s not so bad in swimming although a lot of the ex-swimmers competed a long time ago and maybe are a touch out of date.
Would you swim the full length of the Thames, like David Walliams did in September?
No way. I think it’s pretty insane. But then I think it’s a bit mad to swim the channel, and loads of people do that. I like a nice clear, clean pool where I can see things at the bottom and I know I’m not going to catch a disease.
