Pechstein loses third doping appeal
Five-times Olympic speed skating champion Claudia Pechstein lost another appeal against her two-year doping ban when the Swiss Federal Court dismissed her case.
"The Federal Court has turned down the application from the German speed skater Claudia Pechstein for a revision of the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport," the court said in a statement.
Pechstein was banned by the International Skating Union (ISU) in July 2009 backdated to February last year. She had never failed a drugs test but her blood showed abnormal values in a series of tests, ISU said.
Pechstein, who was allowed to continue training but not to compete, appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which upheld the ban last November.
On the eve of this year's Winter Olympics in Vancouver, she appealed to a CAS ad hoc committee which said it did not have the jurisdiction to review the case, thwarting her last-ditch attempt to take part in her sixth successive games.
Pechstein, 38, is her country's most successful winter Olympic champion with five golds, two silvers and two bronze medals.
