Rio Ferdinand has ruled himself out of the running to replace John Terry as England captain, citing his previous stint in the job.

Ferdinand inherited the captaincy in 2010 when Terry was sacked over allegations he had an affair with then-England team-mate Wayne Bridge's ex-girlfriend.

However, the Manchester United defender was removed from the post in March 2011 when Terry was reinstated - it was widely reported that manager Fabio Capello did not speak to Ferdinand before making the decision public.

Minutes after Terry's removal for the second time on Friday, Ferdinand tweeted: "I don't want to be England captain after the last episode.

"Just want to concentrate on playing for Man Utd and if I make the squad then as ever I'll be delighted."

Terry faces trial in July, charged with racially abusing Ferdinand's brother Anton in a QPR versus Chelsea match last autumn.

It had been reported that Rio was considering refusing to shake Terry's hand before Sunday's game between Chelsea and United at Stamford Bridge.

However, a potentially awkward situation has been averted by the news that the Chelsea captain will miss the game through injury.
