Scotland skip Warwick Smith claimed the scalp of Olympic silver medallists Norway in his opening group match at the men's World Curling Championships in Cortina d'Ampezzo.
Thomas Ulsrud's rink arrived as favourites with Canada's Kevin Martin - who beat them in the final in Vancouver - absent.
But Smith, who is defending the title won by David Murdoch in Moncton last year, edged to a 5-4 victory ahead of games against Sweden and France on Sunday.
Germany - skipped by Andreas Kapp - lead the early standings after winning both their matches against China and Japan.
