Sanchez wins Vuelta a Burgos opener
Euskaltel-Euskadi's Samuel Sanchez started the Vuelta a Burgos event in the best possible way as he powered his way to victory atop the category three San Juan del Monte climb to claim victory in stage one.
Katusha's Joaquin Pardilla kept pace with 2011 Tour de France polka dot jersey winner in the final kilometre as the pair rode clear of the peloton, but finished second to the Spaniard in the final push to the finish line.
Movistar rider Sergio Pardillar finished four seconds outside Sanchez's time to finish third, in front of Geoux-TMC's Denis Menchov.
As no time bonuses are given at the finish line, the general classification mirrors the finishing order with Sanchez claiming the first leader's jersey.
Yoann Offredo led a dominating pack containing Kenny De Ketele Ketele (Topsport Vlaanderen-Mercator) and Jose Vicente Toribio (Andalucia Caja Granada) but when their advantage dropped below one minute inside the final 20km, the Frenchman elected to go alone in search of stage honours.
However, despite riding superbly, Offredo ultimately succumbed to the peloton's chase effort, led by Euskaltel-Euskadi, with 6.5km remaining.
