Peiffer wins gold in Maine

Arnd Peiffer turned in a superb shooting display to claim victory in the 10km sprint at the biathlon World Cup event at Presque Isle, Maine.

Peiffer’s perfect performance with the rifle gave him a 15.9-second win over France's Martin Fourcade on the East Coast of the United States.

Fourcade missed one of his targets while standing, allowing Peiffer to go ahead.

Ivan Tcherezov of Russia hit all of his targets but finished 36.6 seconds back in third.

Tarjei Boe of Norway leads the overall standings on 641 points, ahead of compatriot Emil Hegle Svendsen (592) and Fourcade (531).

Helena Ekholm of Sweden won the women's 7.5km sprint to go top of the overall World Cup standings

Ekholm's flawless shooting saw her finish in 20:38.7, followed Tora Berger of Norway 8.8s back.

Valj Semerenko of Ukraine was third, 19.4s behind.

Ekholm moves to 606 points, overtaking Kaisa Makarainen of Finland (592), with Andrea Henkel of Germany (539) third.

The World Cup continues with a mixed team relay in Presque Isle Saturday, with the men and women in action on Sunday.
