France's Tsonga beat Grigor Dimitrov (Bulgaria) 7-6(5) 7-5 while there were also no problems for third-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych as he triumphed 7-5 7-5 over Juergen Melzer (Austria).

Tsonga said: "Of course I think I have chance, but it's tough for me to say how much."

However, Spain's fourth seed Almagro lost 6-3 6-2 to Mikhail Youzhny of Russia while the former's compatriot Marcel Granollers defeated fifth seed Simon (France) 6-3 6-1.

Seventh seed John Isner did not make it on to court and so Ivan Ljubicic was left to face losing qualifier Teymuraz Gabashvili of Russia - the Croatian went through in straight sets 7-5 7-5.

Tsonga will play Zhang Ze in the last 16 after he beat fellow wildcard Li Zhe 6-1 6-3.

Berdych next faces qualifier Philipp Kohlschreiber (Germany) after he beat Tommy Robredo (Spain) 6-3 7-6(0).

Roddick storms out of press conference

Albert Montanes set up a meeting with Kevin Anderson, vanquisher of Andy Roddick on Monday, by beating Paul Capdeville (Chile) 6-3 6-3 while Fabio Fognini (Italy) also beat a lucky loser in Grega Zemlja of Slovenia - 6-4 6-1 - to earn a second-round place opposite Marin Cilic.

Juan Carlos Ferrero won 6-1 7-6 over Thomaz Bellucci and will play Granollers next.

Defending men's champion and world number one Novak Djokovic pulled out two days before the start of the tournament because of a back injury.
