Djokovic produced some of his best tennis in front of a raucous Belgrade crowd to win 6-3 6-1 7-5.

Earlier Gael Monfils had given France the best possible start, triumphing 6-1 7-6(4) 6-0 against a nervous Janko Tipsarevic.

The first set was a struggle for Serbian Djokovic, but he came through it by taking the solitary break.

The second set was all about him, with Simon increasingly frustrated as his superior opponent delivered an unstoppable display of serving and aggressive rallying.

The match slipped further away from Simon in the third set when he was broken for 2-1 but he produced a spirited fightback including several match points saved.

Djokovic ultimately did enough to close out the match.

Saturday will see Viktor Troicki and Nenad Zimonjic face Arnaud Clement and Michael Llodra in the doubles before the final singles rubbers on Sunday.
