Madrid made it ten league wins on the bounce with a dominant display. The league leaders never looked in danger with goals from Angel Di Maria, Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcelo sealing victory.

Sporting Gijon failed to ever really get going, posing very little attacking threat in the final third and ultimately paid the price.

It was Madrid's Ronaldo who had the first meaningful attempt on goal as the Portuguese saw his strike drift wide of the Gijon goal on 17 minutes.

Just two minutes later Angel Di Maria forced Juan Pablo into action in the Sporting Gijon goal. The Argentine winger fired a fierce shot at goal but saw his effort beaten away by Pablo.

Marcelo used his pace and strength to beat a number of Gijon players down the left before eventually being shoulder charged by Oscar Trejo. Despite the appeals, the Sporting midfielder avoided a booking.

On 33 minutes Gonzalo Higuain thought he had given Madrid the lead, but the linesman correctly ruled the goal out for offside. However just a minute later they did take the lead.

Di Maria did well to force a mistake out of Sporting left back Damian Suarez. Di Maria got to the by-line and instead of crossing, snuck the ball past Pablo at his near post with the outside of his foot.

As a feisty first half drew to a close Gijon almost got back into it as Trejo forced a save from Iker Casillas from 20 yards.

Suarez wasted a glorious chance for the hosts on 57 minutes when the defender mistimed his header at the back post. With the ball going well wide of the Madrid goal.

They were made to pay for that miss just seven minutes later as Di Maria found Ronaldo with a delightful through ball. Ronaldo kept his cool and rounded the keeper before slotting home from a tight angle.

Ronaldo turned provider on 71 minutes, finding Higuain who ghosted his way into the box but saw his shot saved by Pablo who stood tall.

With ten minutes to go Sporting were reduced to ten men as Sebastian Eguren received a second yellow card for a tug back on Ronaldo.

Into stoppage time and Madrid sealed their dominance with a third as Marcelo wriggled his way into the box. The Brazilian left back had time to compose himself before firing into the top corner past the helpless Pablo.
