Manchester United have confirmed an agreement to sign Borussia Dortmund playmaker Shinji Kagawa.

The Japan international, 23, is reportedly set to cost United £14 million and will join the Premier League club after passing a medical and obtaining a work permit.

A club statement read: "Manchester United is delighted to announce that it has agreed terms with both Borussia Dortmund and Shinji Kagawa for his transfer to the club.

"The deal is subject only to the player medical and obtaining a UK work permit. These conditions are anticipated to be completed by the end of June."

United missed out on Belgium international Eden Hazard, who completed his £32 million transfer to Chelsea on Monday, but the imminent signing of Kagawa gives them some much-needed creativity in midfield.

His two-year spell in the Bundesliga saw Kagawa become one of German football's most impressive playmakers.

Kagawa signed for Dortmund from Cerezo Osaka for a fee of just €350,000 (£280,000) in the summer of 2010 and helped the German club secure the Bundesliga title in his first season at Signal Iduna Park.

The midfielder again played a central role in the club's double success this season, scoring 17 goals and claiming 10 assists in 42 games in all competitions.

Kagawa's refusal to sign a new contract with Dortmund saw him become the subject of constant speculation towards the end of the 2011-12 season and he made clear to Dortmund that he wanted to pursue a move to England.

When Kagawa completes his move to Old Trafford he will become the fifth Japanese player to play in the Premier League following Junichi Inamoto, Kazuyuki Toda, Hidetoshi Nakata and Ryo Miyaichi.

  1. United still have to sign more players especially in the holding midfield and central defense. Sir Alex should ensure there are defenders who can competently fill the gap of injured defenders like Vidich. Smalling is up to the task but Johnny Evans is not up to the task. If United want to challenge and win trophies then the team must be prepared for the challenge. First stage of the preparation is the assembled team for the season. Does United want to crash out of Champions league so early as it was last season or do they want to loose the EPLF at the last moment when most fans thought they have it? Man City are still going to strong title defenders, Chelsea too will be there to capitalize on the weakness of any team that

  6. big players doesn't make a team anyway.United just need a good midfielder that will be available always.United need to attack more vigorously and shouldn't allow themselves to be attacked. Football nowadays is physical fitness or just forget it.United have the best playing style in the pl but weak in attacking and avoiding threats. the keeper is a joke. he's too lazy and always allows players to attack him when there's a corner.

  8. Kagawa will be the starting 11, as he is the link clearly missed by Man Utd... If anyone had seen him play for Dortmund, you will realise he is sort of a "assist-master" like Steve Nash for the Suns... Dortmund had been without Goatze for the second half of the season and it was Kagawa who stir them to the title towards the end and soundly beaten Bayern Munich....unlike a certain Chelsea who deploy cowardly tactic against the talented Bayern.. So i think Kagawa will provide more assist to Rooney, Welback and Hernandez......unlike the moody Nani who i will not miss if he choose to leave Man Utd

  9. Hoping that he will have a place in the starting 11 (or at least a chance?) and isn't just another corporative move to sell shirts in Japan.
