Bundesliga - Injured Barnetta to stay put
An injury to Bayern Leverkusen midfielder Tranquillo Barnetta has scuppered a possible move away from the club, his agent has confirmed.
The 26-year old has been at Leverkusen since 2004 but has been linked with a move to Premier League side Newcastle, although Wigan and Sunderland were reported to be interested.
However, his agent, Franco Moretti, has confirmed that the Swiss international suffered an injury this week.
He said: “It is unfortunate but Tranquillo picked up an injury this week, which means he is not even thinking about moving.
"It is a muscle injury which could rule him out for three weeks, so at the moment his only concern is about getting fit."
Despite there being confusion about Barnetta’s future with the Bundesliga club, Moretti confirmed that he had held talks with Newcastle and that everything appeared to be going smoothly.
"Newcastle acted properly throughout, we know somebody was claiming things they should not have been, but we wanted to make sure everyone was aware that the club did everything they should," he added.
"Newcastle, and other clubs we have been talking to, have been very good with us.
"But at the moment a deal is not in the offing, although in football you never know - it all depends on how quickly Tranquillo recovers, it could still happen - but we will have to wait and see."
