Wolfsburg coach Felix Magath remains optimistic about the season ahead, despite his side having exited the DFB-Pokal at the first round stage.

Bundesliga - Magath expects Europe

The Wolves were beaten by RB Leipzig, carrying over their poor form from last term which saw them only avoid relegation from the Bundesliga on the final day.

But, Magath believes he can re-establish the 2009 league champions among the front-runners in the Bundesliga and he expects a great deal of improvement from his players.

"I expect a better season than the last one and presume that we will be competing for a place in Europe," he told his club's website.

"Even if we are not one of the pre-season favourites and have played a miserable cup match, and maybe had a bit of an unsettled start, I am optimistic that we will play a leading role.

"The measures we have taken this week should help us to pick up our first win in Cologne."

Magath stripped Marcel Schafer of the club's captaincy as a reaction to last weekend's defeat, and he will leave it until the last minute to decide who will now wear the armband at the Mungersdorfer Stadion.

"It was a difficult decision," said Magath. "Marcel has fulfilled his role with a lot of dedication and engagement, otherwise maybe we would not even have avoided relegation last year.

"But I saw myself forced to make changes within the team after the performance in Leipzig."
