Garmin-Cervelo’s Dan Martin took victory and the yellow jersey as he emerged the fastest rider through a rain-soaked stage six in Poland.
The stage had started gently, with a ten-rider breakaway fleeing after ten kilometres. The group was led by Lampre’s Diego Ulissi, Team Sky’s Morris Possoni and Omega Pharma-Lotta’s Oscar Pujol.
"I wanted to win the stage and I forgot the general," he said afterwards. "At one point I thought it was possible to win because I took ten seconds very quickly. But then I saw the big group behind me and I rode easier to wait for it."
The leading pack's advantage went to 5:25 but with 28 kilometres to go, they were caught as the rain started affecting the majority of the circuit.
In the toughest slopes, Martin accelerated and the leaders' group split behind him but after the Irishman’s attack, Poland's Marek Rutkiewicz of CCC Polsat countered and led the race until 2.5 kilometres from the finish.
In the last 600 metres of the up-hill finish, Martin increased the speed again, eventually grabbing a lead and crossing the line ahead of both Vacansoleil riders Wouter Poels and Marco Marcato.
