Erbanova pips Wust to Budapest gold
Karolina Erbanova beat off the charge of Olympic champion Ireen Wust to get her hands on the first gold medal of the ISU European Speed Skating Championships in Budapest.
Erbanova, of the Czech Republic, was one of 23 skaters to line up in the women’s 500m, the first event in Hungary, and produced a storming performance to come out on top.
She clocked a time of 39.87seconds, nearly half a second ahead of two-time Olympic champion Wust, who clocked 40.21 for silver on the first day of three.
Russian Yuliya Skokova was a further 0.19 behind for bronze, beating off teammate Yekaterina Lobysheva, before returning to the ice to claim women’s 3000m silver.
She clocked a time of 4:26.78minutes but couldn’t quite reel in Norwegian Hege Bokko who ran away with gold by nearly four tenths of a second.
Well over two seconds separated Bokko and Skokova in first and second with Bente Kraus in third – the German winning bronze in 4:28.85.
