Olympic champion Tatjana Huefner delighted a home German crowd in Koenigssee to chalk up her second FIL World Cup victory of the season to extend her lead at the top of the overall rankings.

The 28-year-old, who topped the podium at the opening World Cup of the season in Igls, edged out compatriot Natalie Geisenberger to take gold, adding to back-to-back silvers since her curtain-raising victory.

It’s a 30th career World Cup victory for Huefner, who now has 370 points from her four World Cup outings.

Geisenberger looked set to upstage her illustrious compatriot but the Olympic bronze medallist and three-time world runner-up made a mistake at the notorious ‘Echowand’ turn and there proved no way back.

“It was a poor first run. But then I was surely a bit lucky because Natalie made such a big mistake. Well, perhaps there is a poetic justice,” said Huefner, who lost out to Geisenberger in Whistler in round two.

Canada’s Alex Gough, who topped the podium in round three on home ice in Calgary, clings on to second spot in the overall rankings with 300 points while Geisenberger is hot on her heels with 295.

“There’s no denying it – I simply made a big mistake at the ‘Echowand’ exit. It already happened to me several times this year,” said Geisenberger. “I’ve chucked away good results far too often.”
