Cavendish blasts team-mate Greipel

Mark Cavendish has launched a withering attack on Columbia-HTC team-mate Andre Greipel.

Greipel won the second highest number of professional races in the peloton in 2009 - behind Cavendish - but the German was omitted from the Milan-San Remo classic last month.

The two riders have entirely separate schedules and Greipel, who has said that he "expects his summer holidays will be spent on the Baltic Sea" rather than at the Tour de France, was critical of the Isle of Man sprinter after he finished six minutes down in the first of the sport's monument races.

Now Cavendish has hit back in an interview with the Guardian, where he is quoted as saying: "There's no chance whatsoever that he's coming to a bike race that I'm in.

"Me on bad form is still better than him. I was pretty p***** with Greipel's comments after San Remo. If he thought he could win, he'd say it before the race rather than when he's looking at the results sheet.

"It wasn't through lack of form that I didn't win San Remo - it was bad luck. Last year I won it picking my nose. This year it was possible I'd win again. There's no chance of Greipel winning a 'monument'."

Cavendish then made a thinly veiled attack on Greipel's race schedule.

"If I wanted to just win races I wouldn't ride every ProTour race. I understand that at the moment I'm racing to be in my best form for the Tour de France and the world championships. If I wanted to get s*** small wins, I'd race s*** small races," he commented.
