The Belgian number six seed, who was handed a bye in the first round, wasted little time in disposing of her Chinese opponent to move into the third round, where she will meet the winner of Maria Kirilenko's match with Anna Tatishvili.

Ninth seeded Russian Kirilenko booked her place in the second round with a 6-4 6-0 win over Varvara Lepchenko of the US.

Eleventh seed Peng Shuai was also on cruise control in her 6-2 6-1 victory over Ayumi Morita of Japan, and the Chinese will now play either Nadia Petrova or Edina Gallovits-Hall.

Fellow seed Julia Goerges of Germany (12) was taken to a third set by Eva Birnerova before the Czech player was forced to retire at 2-0 down. Goerges progresses to meet Israel's Shahar Peer, who beat Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden 6-1 6-3.

But it was a bad day at the office for Russia's Alisa Kleybanova as the number eight seed was bounced out of the tournament all too easily by American Christina McHale 6-1 6-0.

In the pick of the first round matches, 10th seed Daniela Hantuchova saw off Alla Kudryavtseva 6-1 7-6(3) while 15th seed Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of the Czech Republic beat compatriot Andrea Hlavackova 6-2 2-6 7-6(6).

Meanwhile, Australia's Jelena Dokic was ousted by Georgian Anna Tatishvili in three sets 7-5 2-6 6-4.
