Mark Cavendish will take part in the Tour of Britain, which starts in Scotland on Sunday, in what could prove the Manx Missile’s swansong for HTC Highroad.

Cavendish, who took his Tour de France stage wins tally to 20 this summer, is yet to confirm whether he will join Dave Brailsford’s ranks at Team Sky next season.

But he will make a first Tour of Britain appearance since 2007, when he won the first two stages of the race, alongside HTC team-mates Bernhard Eisel and perennial lead-out Mark Renshaw, who is imminently due to join RaboBank.

In the Tour of Britain, Cavendish will renew his sprinting duel with the likes of Thor Hushovd as well as Team Sky's Edvald Boasson Hagen.

“As a team we have worked hard over the past fortnight to ensure that Mark Cavendish rides the Tour of Britain,” said race director Mick Bennett.

“We are very pleased that Mark has been given permission by the organisers of the Vuelta a Espana to start the Tour of Britain, and will be able to race in front of home crowds for potentially the final time before the 2012 London Olympics.

“Mark’s addition to the start list will ensure that the sprints are hotly contested. I am sure the spectacle of Mark, Thor Hushovd, Ben Swift and others going head-to-head at stage finishes will draw huge crowds to the roadside once more.”

Cavendish will compete in the Tour of Britain, which begins in Peebles, before heading to Copenhagen where he will bid to become the first British man since Tommy Simpson to win the World Championships.

Last week Geraint Thomas, the highest placed British rider in this year's general classification at the Tour de France, announced he would lead Team Sky in the race.
