Kramer powers to 5000m gold
Reigning Olympic champion Sven Kramer bagged himself some more 5000m silverware with gold in the ISU European Speed Skating Championships in Budapest.
Kramer, who topped the podium in Vancouver over the same distance, was in fine form in Hungary, holding off the challenge of fellow Dutchman Jan Blokhuijsen who took silver.
Kramer’s winning time of 6:31.82 minutes was over four seconds clear of compatriot Blokhuijsen with France’s Alexis Contin completing the podium.
In the women’s 1500m the celebrations were all Martina Sáblíková’s as the Czech Republic two-time Olympic champion topped the podium.
Holland’s Linda de Vries took silver, just over a second back from Sáblíková’s winning time of
Earlier, over 500m it was Poland’s Konrad Niedźwiedzki’s day to remember with a gold-medal winning display.
The 26-year-old held off compatriot Zbigniew Bródka by the smallest of margins – 0.01 seconds - to take victory in the 500m in a time of 36.89 seconds while Blokhuijsen completed the podium over the shorter distance for the first of his two medals during the day.
