Sanchez wins TT to take Basque title
Sanchez (Euskaltel-Euskadi) overhauled the nine-second lead of overnight general classification leader Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha), despite Rodriguez putting in the best time trial of his career.
Rodriguez's efforts saw him come sixth in the 18.9km sixth and final stage, but he lost 21 seconds to Sanchez and finished 12 seconds behind in second place.
Dutch rider Bauke Mollema (Rabobank) finished second on the stage some six seconds behind Sanchez to take third place overall.
Time trial world champion Tony Martin (Omega Pharma-QuickStep) was third on the final stage a further second back.
Rodriguez was philosophical after losing the overall title despite having won the fourth and fifth stages.
"I'm not a specialist of races against the clock but I think I'm improving and this result shows it," he said.
"That's obviously good news for big stage races. Unfortunately, Sanchez today was really great: he knows these routes very well, he's more used to ITT than me, and he put in a great performance."
