Euro 2012 qual. - England player ratings: Joyful Johnson
GK: Joe Hart - 5
England have now won all six matches in which Hart has featured, but the Manchester City keeper showed his first sign of international uncertainty with a clutch of dropped catches and miscued clearances that momentarily buoyed Switzerland. Could do little about Xherdan Shaqiri's long-range strike.
RB: Glen Johnson - 6
Linked up well with his namesake Adam at times, but the introduction of Shaqiri at half-time showed there are still plenty of question marks over his defending.
CB: Phil Jagielka - 6
Another steady performance from the Everton centre-back that will do his standing no harm at all.
CB: Joleon Lescott - 7
International experience and a previous partnership at club level with Jagielka got him the nod over Gary Cahill, and he repaid his bosses' faith with a good game despite playing at left-back for Manchester City.
LB: Ashley Cole - 7
A typically consummate performance from Cole, which included the assist for Darren Bent's goal, was only tarnished by his booking.
RM: Theo Walcott - 6
A bright start from the Arsenal winger, who was perhaps fortunate to keep his place over Adam Johnson. His reward for his involvement in the opening goal was to continue his run into the box and pick up an injury after just 10 minutes; otherwise his mark would have been higher.
CM: Steven Gerrard - 7
Not quite as influential here as he was against Bulgaria, but the captain looks so much more comfortable in the middle and distributed the ball well at times, including the through ball that led to the second goal.
CM: Gareth Barry - 7
Supported the defence well, breaking up several Swiss attacks, though he was perhaps fortunate not to go into the referee's book after committing several fouls throughout.
LM: James Milner - 7
A characteristically tireless match from Milner, who chipped in with his defensive duties as well as often providing an outlet from set pieces. His second booking in as many matches means he will miss the next match against Montenegro.
FW: Wayne Rooney - 8
Followed up his great game against Bulgaria with another instrumental performance. Always looked a threat in his withdrawn role, picking out Adam Johnson and Jermain Defoe on several occasions.
FW: Jermain Defoe - 6
Despite getting himself into the right positions, was unable to get on the scoresheet following his hat-trick last week. Fired his best chance right at the goalkeeper.
Adam Johnson (on for Walcott, 13') - 8
Once again grabbed his chance with both hands, coolly taking the ball around the keeper for his goal and generally threatening the Swiss defence as much as Rooney did. Milner's suspension means he will surely start against Montenegro.
Darren Bent (on for Defoe, 70') - 7
At the seventh time of asking, Bent finally broke his international duck with a well-taken finish. Would almost certainly have scored a minute earlier were it not for...
Shaun Wright-Phillips (on for Rooney, 80') - 5
Capello's persistence with the Man City man - the sixth on show this evening - is a mystery to many England fans, but his hesitance in squaring the ball to Bent when he was in acres of space may well give the manager second thoughts.
