Classy Karl wins in Bad Gastein
Olympic silver medallist Benjamin Karl captured his second FIS snowboarding World Cup victory of the season with an impressive win in Bad Gastein, Austria on Sunday.
The 25-year-old Austrian, who played second fiddle to the USA’s Jasey Jay Anderson in Vancouver last February, proved too strong for Italy’s Aaron March to scoop parallel slalom victory.
It’s a second win of the season for Karl, who earlier topped the parallel giant slalom podium in Limone Piemonte in December while Switzerland’s Simon Schoch edged out Rok Marguc of Slovenia for bronze.
In the women’s race, Russia’s Ekaterina Tudegesheva also won her second World Cup of the season, coming home ahead of Marion Kreiner of Austria.
Tudegesheva, the 2007 world champion, much like Karl, also added to her victory in Limone Piemonte while Austria’s Claudia Riegler won the race for bronze to complete the podium with Isabella Laboeck missing out in fourth place.
