The Norwegian held off the efforts of Netherlands' Kjeld Nuis – both in Germany and overall – to take the maximum 150 points to lift the World Cup title.

America’s Shani Davis took third in the overall World Cup competition despite finishing sixth on the day as Koen Verweij made it a Dutch silver-bronze double.

It was a familiar tale over 3000m as reigning Olympic champion Martina Sablikova from the Czech Republic claimed the overall title in the perfect possible fashion with gold  in Berlin.

Sablikova looked nailed on to take the title with a healthy lead heading into the final round and she didn’t disappoint with victory ahead of German double act Stephanie Beckert and Claudia Pechstein, who placed second and third on the day and overall.

Over 500m it was tighter affair with China’s Jing Yu taking victory in the World Cup finale to edge her way to the overall title by a margin of just 31 points from Germany’s Jenny Wolf.

In the men’s 500m America’s Tucker Fredricks took the World Cup title despite finishing 14th in Berlin as Canada’s Jamie Gregg took victory on the day.
