Nice midfielder Emerse Fae has been ruled out for the rest of the season after being diagnosed with a blood clot in his leg for the second time in his career.

The Ivory Coast international, 27, suffered the problem in his right thigh and will require several months to recover, his coach Eric Roy said.

"We are coming to terms with the results of medical tests on Emerse and they are really not good," Roy said. "He is suffering from a blood clot and we have therefore lost him until the end of the season.

"We are very sad for him and for the repercussions to the club. After David Hellebuyck (who has been out all season) he is our second major long-term absentee.

"But we will continue to think of the player, above everything else."

Fae scored three goals in 24 Ligue 1 matches this season, but had been playing with what had been slight discomfort.

It is not the first time he has suffered such a problem, having been diagnosed with a clot in his calf in May 2009.

The former Reading midfielder’s team-mates rallied in his support, with fellow midfielder Didier Digard - who played for Middlesbrough in England - concerned for Fae’s health.

"I feel really bad for him," Digard said.

"He’s not suffering from a normal injury but a health problem."

His club have planned a tribute before Saturday’s match at home to Auxerre.
