The 16-times grand slam champion, who has won the Wimbledon warm-up event five times but skipped it last year, barely broke sweat in a 6-1 6-2 victory.

Federer, who lost his world number one ranking to Rafael Nadal after being beaten in the quarter-finals of the French Open last week, faces Philipp Kohlschreiber next after the German put out Swiss Marco Chiudinelli 6-4 7-5.

French Open semi-finalist Juergen Melzer, seeded sixth, suffered a shock 3-6 7-6 7-6 defeat by young German Mischa Zverev.

Former Wimbledon champion Lleyton Hewitt went through with a 6-3 6-3 defeat of Dutchman Thiemo de Bakker.
