The rising star from Bury, only 19 and a junior world champion last year, added to his victory at the inaugural Twinings Pro-Am Tour Premier race in Wiltshire two weeks ago with a narrow victory over Italy’s Filippo Fortini.

Australia's Thomas Palmer was third.

David Boily of Canada stayed safely in the main group to retain his lead atop the general classification.

Stage six was a 153.5km ride around Fossano, a town at the foot of the Alps, just over the Italian border.

Most of the seven-stage race takes place in France’s alpine region, with forays into Switzerland as well as Italy.

The Tour de l'Avenir is an eight-day race for national teams dubbed the "Tour of the Future" for U23 Tour de France prospects.

Felice Gimondi, Joop Zoetemelk, Greg Lemond, Miguel Indurain and Laurent Fignonall are all previous winners of the Tour de l'Avenir in the past who went on to win 12 Tour de France titles between them.
